Mrs. Manezon: "...So we don't have room for the "Shipoopi" number"
Quill: "Hm"
Luann: "You could angle this flat and move the gazebo back"
Mrs. Manezon: "EXCELLENT idea, Lorraine!!"
Quill: "Wow, you saved out shipoopi"
Luann: "We Lorraines are pretty clever"

So… since they’re doing “Shipoopi”, this must be “The Music Man” Musical…. – Shipoopi= girl who’s hard to get… an invented term…. – Oh, that Lena!

Well, Luann (or should I say “Lorraine”), it looks like you are definitely headed in the right direction… ;)

Monica Lewinsky played “Shipoopi” in high school.

There’s 2 positives here. Ms Manezone (sp) sees Luann’s worth and also that Quill chose a good assistant. I think Luann will wind up in the show!
JayBluE over 10 years ago
“I think Quilly’s replacement just arrived.” ^Yeah, his “understudy” just “undercut” him, Lol…-And now, you can say; “Good Ny, Quill…”

Okay, so Ms. Manezone’s going to flashdance Luann into Mooney U on a drama scholarship or something. Aaaand…Lu ends up rooming with Tiff, after all. Or maybe with Bernice. Or hey, maybe they have four in a suite, and they all are in one suite with one new character.

“The Music Man” is a standard production for high school and other amateur musicals, year after year. If those small stages all have room on their stages for the “Shipoopi” dance routine, how come this production doesn’t, and it needs to be rescued by Lorraine’s singular act of inspiration to move the gazebo? How do all those other productions manage, without doing that?

“Shipoopi”, or some spelling similar to that, is also the brand name of a pooper-scooper invented by the brother of actor Tony Shalhoub. (Mr Shalhoub’s design catches the payload before it hits the ground.)
Mephistopheles over 10 years ago
@Mordock999 – I hope your glasses comment was a tip of the hat to your joke. Shipoopi was a song from the Music Man. And not one of the better songs in the set but still worth saving.

Of course, super special Luann saves the day. If Quill and Proffy Poo are that stupid that they can’t figure that out maybe they just need to quit.

A. Actually, “Shipoopi” is usually the biggest dance number.
B. If you’re asking about her personality and attitude, well, I have known women in high positions in theater who are like her. If you’re asking about her lack of spatial vision, heck, I can act about as well as any amateur can (and I’ve been in professional productions in New York), but my wife can run rings around me when it comes to solving on-stage traffic problems. Just like Luann in this strip, she just looks and says, “Do this”, and she’s always right. Me—I understand why she’s right, in hindsight, but I don’t see the answer myself until she says it.

That’s good, Evans is having the camp put on a play that actually exists! (Instead of clown nose theatre.) I am grateful for that.

The “Family Guy” version includes the entire original dance music, as-is, and was based on the original Broadway choreography (allowing for the change to a completely different venue). Onna White’s daughter, Jeanne, praised it.

Doesn’t the Moony Uni drama department have entire classes in set design? Don’t they have upperclass students on the camp staff who have taken those classes, or even instructors who have taught them? Why are they relying on Quill!, who hasn’t even started at Moony yet, and Lorraine, who isn’t even a student there, to perform this critical part of producing the camp’s play?
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Since Bernice is going to be be a Moony U student, I’d like to see Luann & Quill talk her into auditioning for the part of Marian the Librarian!
seismic-2 Premium Member over 10 years ago
> some people just can’t help getting up on the wrong side of the bed.>Yeah – the side of reason and logic. Too much to expect of a comic strip, clearly.
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Yeah, that’s it— Bernice as Marian Paroo, but a new character would have to be created for the part of Professor Harold Hill. Possibly, he could be based upon one of the readers of this strip, whose nickname is “professor.”

> No money.>I thought Quill! was getting paid? If not, then when he “hired” an assistant, she too must be unpaid. I’ll bet “Lorraine’s” parents wish she were spending the summer before entering Pitt CC working at a paying job, instead of doing unpaid work just to hang around her boyfriend!_If the job does pay a salary, even if it isn’t very much, some Moony Uni student who has studied set design would probably take it, for the experience plus the small stipend.

Something about the strip, the song titles, the lyrics, or the postings, brought an old tune into my head and I had to spend awhile on Google to track it down:.Kenny Rogers singing “You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille”

Uh oh! Warning, Will Robinson!! I think I see the “A Star Is Born” plot starting up here! Luanne starts upstaging the acknowledged star and gets all the kudos from Manezon. Quill gets relegated to second-tier status, and doesn’t take it very well…

Actually, most of the college stages I’ve seen have been smaller than most of the high school stages I’ve seen. (I live in the NJ suburbs of NYC.) The most awful example I can think of offhand is Minor Latham Theater at Barnard College, which doesn’t even have a left wing or any kind of access from backstage to stage left.
High-school stages, though, almost never have usable fly space, and the one I went to had (and still has) the light board in one of the wings, 90% of the lighting coming from directly overhead, and the rest at about a 45º angle from a ceiling cove, though that’s been corrected somewhat since my time with a couple of ladders in the house.
Jim Kerner over 10 years ago
It’s an old joke. One version was, Was your mother ever frightened by a mule? Because the child is stubborn like one. In your case, it’s because you come up with crazy puns, titles for songs or parodies. So, you see, I’m using it in a complimentary way comparing you to Weird Al Yankovic..
