Okay, so Ms. Manezone’s going to flashdance Luann into Mooney U on a drama scholarship or something. Aaaand…Lu ends up rooming with Tiff, after all. Or maybe with Bernice. Or hey, maybe they have four in a suite, and they all are in one suite with one new character.

“The Music Man” is a standard production for high school and other amateur musicals, year after year. If those small stages all have room on their stages for the “Shipoopi” dance routine, how come this production doesn’t, and it needs to be rescued by Lorraine’s singular act of inspiration to move the gazebo? How do all those other productions manage, without doing that?

“Shipoopi”, or some spelling similar to that, is also the brand name of a pooper-scooper invented by the brother of actor Tony Shalhoub. (Mr Shalhoub’s design catches the payload before it hits the ground.)

    A. Actually, “Shipoopi” is usually the biggest dance number.

    B. If you’re asking about her personality and attitude, well, I have known women in high positions in theater who are like her. If you’re asking about her lack of spatial vision, heck, I can act about as well as any amateur can (and I’ve been in professional productions in New York), but my wife can run rings around me when it comes to solving on-stage traffic problems. Just like Luann in this strip, she just looks and says, “Do this”, and she’s always right. Me—I understand why she’s right, in hindsight, but I don’t see the answer myself until she says it.

The “Family Guy” version includes the entire original dance music, as-is, and was based on the original Broadway choreography (allowing for the change to a completely different venue). Onna White’s daughter, Jeanne, praised it.

Doesn’t the Moony Uni drama department have entire classes in set design? Don’t they have upperclass students on the camp staff who have taken those classes, or even instructors who have taught them? Why are they relying on Quill!, who hasn’t even started at Moony yet, and Lorraine, who isn’t even a student there, to perform this critical part of producing the camp’s play?

Yeah, that’s it— Bernice as Marian Paroo, but a new character would have to be created for the part of Professor Harold Hill. Possibly, he could be based upon one of the readers of this strip, whose nickname is “professor.”

    > No money.>I thought Quill! was getting paid? If not, then when he “hired” an assistant, she too must be unpaid. I’ll bet “Lorraine’s” parents wish she were spending the summer before entering Pitt CC working at a paying job, instead of doing unpaid work just to hang around her boyfriend!_If the job does pay a salary, even if it isn’t very much, some Moony Uni student who has studied set design would probably take it, for the experience plus the small stipend.

Actually, most of the college stages I’ve seen have been smaller than most of the high school stages I’ve seen. (I live in the NJ suburbs of NYC.) The most awful example I can think of offhand is Minor Latham Theater at Barnard College, which doesn’t even have a left wing or any kind of access from backstage to stage left.

High-school stages, though, almost never have usable fly space, and the one I went to had (and still has) the light board in one of the wings, 90% of the lighting coming from directly overhead, and the rest at about a 45º angle from a ceiling cove, though that’s been corrected somewhat since my time with a couple of ladders in the house.
