Great! I will be looking forward to them! Last year I went down to Phoenix to visit relatives for 16 days. When I came back (it was 11 May), my roses needed clipping, some plants needed watering (although my hub did try to catch up there!), etc. I no sooner got all caught up when I tripped and broke two of my fingers! Was in a closed cast for three weeks and then an “open” cast for three more. Should have seen my poor yard. My hub couldn’t keep up as he had his own physical problems at that point in time. Anyway…This year I am managing to keep up! Still have grass growing around my rose bushes that is a (insert proper words here)! Roses are wonderful plants…but, gosh, they can be a Lot of work! The result is lovely, however! ;)

It IS restful to work on my roses…restful to the mind, anyway! Not so much restful for the body, however! LOL I’ve spent many an hour grooming and fussing with them, and nothing is neater than seeing them responding to my care by blooming! I am going to have to replace a couple of them, however, as they aren’t producing good blooms. But for the “good” ones, well, just their fragrance will fill the senses! I guess Luann is not into roses as I’ve never really seen her gardening or pulling weeds…I don’t remember Nancy doing this either. ;)

OMG!It’s a theater major named Desdemona after the character in Othello . Now, Luann has another tie-in to the Mooney U. theater department that’ll keep her away from her own school.

Is that mask a piece of African art? Will the strip now get a student from Africa? And if Moony Uni is about to start classes, did Gunther come back yet, or will he actually give up his admissions slot in the class of 2018?

Yeah, seriously! A couch! Wall and floor cabinets! Are dorms just bigger now?

Okay so Bernie’s New Roomie, “Dez” is Really Desi Arnaz Jr, “Little Ricky” from the “I Love Lucy” Shows from the 1950s.Berns gonna get a REAL Kick when “Dez” starts Pounding on His drum Kit and Screaming “Ba-Ba-Luuuuuuuuuuu” during the Full Moon at about 2AM in the Morning.

> Usually Parents drop kids off at dorms. When did that change?>Bernice can easily move into her dorm one trip at a time, since she lives locally, and she doesn’t need to load up the car and have help moving in all at once. As for “Dez”, maybe she lives hundreds (or even thousands) of miles away, so she would have moved in all by herself, maybe in just a couple of hours (if she brought only what she could bring on the plane). Or maybe Dez’s family did help her move in, but since Bernice is local she’s waiting until the last minute to move in, so they haven’t met yet.

“Compact”? It’s huge for a dorm room!

Geez! My dorm room was two beds, a dresser and two desks. That looks pretty nice to me!

Is this a same-sex dorm or a mixed-sex dorm? Is Dez female or male? How much prior information has Bernice received? This should be interesting going forward….

I thought the mask looks like a comic book villain or anti-hero. Maybe the new roommate is fun, cool, and relaxed with an eye towards graphic arts. All in all — A Great Person.

@JPuzzleWhiz-Couldn’t use the ‘reply’ function to respond to your comment about dorms that house women and men; all I got was a box that said ‘cancel’ and provided no buttons to push. Seemst to happen frequently now…-Way back in the dinosaur days when I transferred to UMich in Ann Arbor, there were a few dorms where the floors alternated between male and female. I don’t think this was continued, although I could be wrong. There were some problems with this from the get-go. Mostly a lot of late night partying, but also some criminal acts (assaults).

For those pointing out no college would allow men and women to room together, since when has Evans ever cared about facts?
seismic-2 Premium Member about 10 years ago
That quote was of course the source of the title for the best-selling novel “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John Kennedy Toole, which was published in 1980 more than a decade after the author’s suicide at age 31. (Toole wrote two novels, and he was not able to get either one published during his lifetime.) His life is a sad but fascinating story.

Why pay for a dorm room when the school is in your home town? The college debt will be high enough! And . . . is that Quill saying “A name I know!”?
TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
Folks, I don’t think the roomie is a male, especially considering that in the 3rd pannel, Bernice refers to her name as “Dez”…. I agree… Desiree or something like that, until we know more.
reedkomicks Premium Member about 10 years ago
I seriously doubt that there’s a college that would put boys and girls in the same dorm, much less the same room.-Speaking as someone who is starting one kid in college this year and one next year, most colleges put boys and girls in the same dorm, but yes, not room.
Bucinka about 10 years ago
Heh. Better take a pic of that nice neat room. This is the last we’ll ever see of that….

TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
I seriously doubt that there’s a college that would put boys and girls in the same dorm, much less the same room.
We had plenty of co-ed dorms during my time. The separation was by “wing and/or floor.” There were some univ. dorms (as opposed to “Greek” Housing) that were “one gender only” (mostly female). There were not, however, any co-ed “rooms” on campus, that I recall. Perhaps the rare exception of a “married couple,” but one would think they’d be in “off campus” housing.

If Bernice gets a new best friend at Moony, then Luann will need to get a new best friend at Pitt CC. Bye bye, Bernice!

I thought Bernice was going to Moony Uni? Why would she live in a dorm instead of living at home?
tuttibug about 10 years ago
“A name I know” is being said by Quill…and Dez is in the theater department also. Now Luann can worry about Bernice-Dez-Quill hanging out together all school year!!

Will Quill! also live in a Moony Uni dorm, or will he continue rooming with Honeybunch Mrs. Berger?

Some colleges require freshmen to room on-campus their first year, as part of the adjustment to college life.
At my school, it was not “required” for freshman, but all freshman were “guaranteed” university housing. What they did try to do was put as many freshman into dorms with “double rooms” primarily. The objective being, keep the freshman out of singles, for their “mental health.”
Seriously, on the southern half of the campus, there was a large “complex” of interconnected dorm “houses” 4 stories, 2 quads, and the main lobby and cafe in between. The whole thing looked like a square numeral “8” from the top. We called it “The Complex.” Almost all single rooms. Perhaps 1 or 2 quad rooms. The Univ. housing admin. did their best to keep incoming freshman away from that complex but were not always successful, due to general housing shortages. Let’s just say, the majority of those freshman who committed suicide during their freshman year, lived in that complex. It was a big deal. So much so, that someone with a little “gallows humor” designed a black t-shirt which said “The Complex” over a chalk line drawing of a human. On the back it said, “I survived.”
Every spring, we’d have the dreaded “housing lottery.” Returning upper class folks who still wanted Univ. housing would have to participate. We did this because, at the time, there was simply not enough Univ. housing to accommodate all undergrad students who wanted it, and guarantee incoming freshman Univ. housing. You would put in your preferences (best choice was always to keep what you had with the roommate you had). On the appointed day, you would go to draw your number (raffle ticket style), 1-4000+. The lower the number, the better your choices would be honored. The higher, and the greater likelihood of getting kicked out of Univ. Housing. Except for one year, I always drew in the 500’s, meaning I kept what I had. One year, did I drew 2738 and my potential roommate drew 2559… lower number, counted. But it didn’t matter. I got bounced into the Complex at the beginning of my junior year, and there I stayed until I graduated.
I survived…. :-)

With older ‘commuter-type’ colleges like University of Pgh (even though it is a 4 year with grad school), there is an expectation that a certain percentage of freshmen (and sophomores) are commuting from home, and using public transportation. Land for parking lots and dorms is in short supply at urban colleges. -‘Land grant’ colleges, like Penn State and Florida State, have a lot more land available to build dorms as well as classrooms.-One of the results of this kind of thing is that a lot of people either lease houses to students in neighborhoods near the college, or build ‘student apartments’. There is a frequent conflict between the older neighborhoods and the unsupervised off-campus student housing; that was true at Pitt, and I find it true here in Central Florida in the neighborhoods near University of Central Florida.-The best solution would be on-campus housing with ‘house parents’, so the kids get some supervision their first time away from home. But funds for colleges (for things other than sports arenas) are in short supply now…

Hmm…a couch, a kitchenette—where are the beds, desks, and dressers? This entire front room is bigger than my kids’ freshman dorms, which were one room, in some cases not even large enough to accomodate the six pieces of furniture the college provided for two students.

You Can’t Have Everything Department:Although wishes seldom come true, I’d love to see this strip split into two daily installments, one for Luann & friends in their “college freshmen experience,” and another covering the “lifeline” of Brad & Toni. As much as I have waited for the scenes on campus, I still find myself wondering about the TJ shenanigans.
