Michael, as most readers realize, is perfectly able to tell his mother about school events in advance. He just doesn’t want to. As he said a few days ago, he wants to have fun at the Hallowe’en party, so he doesn’t want his ‘rents there.-As a fallback, in case she finds out, he crumples the paper so badly that no one could read it, and then tells her he brings notices home, but she doesn’t look at them.-Now that you’ve reported on your own daughter’s ‘failure to communicate’, I begin to suspect I may understand some of the reasons for your continual negativity toward the character ‘Elly’…
It’s not always the students’ fault if messages don’t get home. Last Tuesday my son’s school district announced a “College Night” starting at 6:30 that evening. No paper announcement, just an online announcement about 2 hours in advance and a robocall at about the same time, no e-mail.
So we had a 2 hour warning, and couldn’t make it (He’s a junior in HS and it would have been useful). I suspect the college recruiters at the event outnumbered the students.
This is the first time I actually scrolled down past the cartoon, only to find all these ludicrous remarks and jabs at each other. Sheesh, people. Get a life! It’s a COMIC STRIP!
In my day, there were no backpacks. A generation before me (or perhaps half a generation) used to have satchels. I did not see backpacks until college, and even then they were not widely used (early- to mid-70s).
I would think a 10 year old boy might be embarrassed to have his mom chaperone a school event no matter how socially adept she might be. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything in the comic to make me think Elly is socially inappropriate to anyone else.

That is why you put school flyers in your binder which goes in your backpack, Mikey.

My son used to do the Exact same thing! ;)

What Binder, what backpack? Never had those when I was in school and we were not allowed to take the slates out of the classroom.

Binder, backpack – in DK we got the schools Intranet (divided for Parents, pupils, …what do I know, I’m ‘just’ parent)Never lost a note since :)

It’s no mistake—he doesn’t want either of his parents to volunteer.

Michael hoped his mom would not get the notice. Parents kill the fun of children’s parties.

That’s what she gets for not cleaning out the pockets before turning on the water.

Give Mike some credit — he gave her the notice before it went through the wash.

I know Lynn uses ersatz sound effects often, but what is the sound of “Fumble, fumble”?
