In a Community College, lots (maybe even most) classes are in the evening, since working adults are a large part of the student body.

Frank’s probably dreaming that Nancy is talking, so “tune out:” protocol is in effect, since he knows the dryer…uh, drill…

Also, a lot of the instructors are adjuncts, so they have regular “day jobs” in offices or industry and then pick up a few bucks teaching Community College courses in the evenings.

I hope Luann’s class at the CC today isn’t in cosmetology (which is in fact the sort of career training that CCs offer). If it is, then she will fail the course on the first day.

Ahhh…’’Tis the witching hour! “Labored” on Labor Day (US) outside. Was trying to fix a what I call a “fitzer.” You know, the intermittent kind of water stream distribution. Anyway, I tried to re-direct the stream of water and managed to get myself sopping wet! Several times, no less! Gee, things have changed since I was in college. Freshmen had to take early classes since the juniors and seniors grabbed all of the noon classes first.

Actually, they look kind of like the soles on my Birkies! :P

Indeed they have. Taking afternoon Grad classes and the campus is extremely crowded!

I hate to say this but I talked to several students that were taking academic courses with an eye to transferring to a four year school, and their counselors talked them into taking padded schedules that will not transfer half their hours to a decent four year program.

What were the counselors’ objectives for having the students do that? Were they trying to keep the students there and drum up more business for the CC? Did they feel those students would not be successful at a 4 year Univ? Did they receive orders from CC mgt. to fill students into programs that were at risk of being cut if not occupied?

One would think it should be “all about the student” and his/her objectives, but……

But isn’t the point of today’s strip supposed to be that Luann is superficial, and we should laugh at her on account of that? You seems to be implying that Luann should never be the subject of derision.

That outfit would look better if the skirt was black, Luann. Still Luann looks very pretty. The glamour will wear off, and she will be in jeans and T-shirts soon, and she will get up just in time to make it to class.

That’s the problem with not going to a real school. If she were living on campus she’d soon find out sweat pants or Daisy Dukes are considered formal wear.

Luann’s attempt to make herself over for college is understandable, but also a bit overdone. Certainly, getting up at some point before 5:15 AM to prepare herself for a noon class is excessive (not to mention self-defeating; what’s the good of a noon class if you get up at 5:00 AM anyway?).If she is in a noon section of a freshman class, she has probably lucked out and got an experienced prof (since they tend to grab the more comfortable schedules) rather than a green adjunct (who would draw the 8:00 AM sections)….

Heh. I went to high school with one girl who claimed to get up at 4 am every morning to wash and comb-dry her stick-straight taffy blonde hair. Too bad she didn’t spend that time on her schoolwork.

And of course, we want to look presentable, but “real life” doesn’t always look so “well coordinated”….I think too that by the end of this week, Luann will see that her “vision” doesn’t always line up with what actually happens….

Off topic – what’s with the ‘midnight madness’? – a goup of regulars sitting at their keyboards, waiting for the new strip to appear, so that they can make pithy and witty observations about comixReminds me of my early horse betting days – drove to the newsstand at night to be first to get my hands on the Daily Racing Form for the next day’s races, handicapped the races, slept a few hours, drove to the track, played the ponies, drove home, slept a few hours, drove to the newsstand… – labor intensive stuff in the days before everything went online

Luann is trying to look professional and mature, but is not concerned with text books. Tiffany tries to look sexy and does not know what a book is. Crystal is also sexy looking, but has an attitude that defies you to try and break that wall. Rosa is dangerously hot. Potential lovers, beware, she could exhaust you beyond all safe limits.

You could probably win a lot of money if you put the thing online and charged kids $5 to guess what it is….

Most college students wear torn jeans, tee shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, flip-flops, sneakers, messy hair….college guys will see a made-up girl as being on the lookout for guys, to pick up guys. Luann will attract sleazy guys who only want one thing from her. I hope her mother will advise her of that fact.

The majority of classes offered by my community college system are daytime classes (I checked). Also they offer a lot of vocational programs, as well as classes for students who will eventually transfer to a four-year program. But, while I totally understand Luann’s concern about how she looks for the first day of school – she has 12 years of “first day” conditioning, after all – by the time you get to college, the “cool” look is one of nonchalance!

Besides doing class planners based on the degree students wanted, my CC counselors were pretty useless.

It’s still odd that they would encourage those kinds of classes for someone who doesn’t want to learn a trade. But, I know students usually need more classes for an associates degree than they do to transfer.

I remember doing something similar to what Luann is doing when I first started community college and then a four-year. Then, reality and sleep deprivation kicked in and I was back to normal.

If Luann meets some guy at Community College who shows an interest in her, and Quill meets a girl at Moony… (?)

Luann is the “clingy” one. Quill will break off the relationship with Luann, to devote more time to Mrs. Berger his acting career,

When reality kicks in she’ll cut the crap in order to survive academically.

Yeah, Luann is just pretty much “feeling psyched” and “feeling her oats” as an “Adult Rookie”….

The first computer I used was this model (shown in an ad from IBM – our computer room was a lot more cluttered!). I suspect today’s college students don’t recognize most of the peripherals, much less how you coded the computer (on punched cards, of course).-

We must remember that Luann is a comical character..She has faults that we are supposed to find funny..This has been the case from the beginning of the strip.

I doubt she’s on the make. Looks more to me she’s trying to “dress up” as she imagines it— everyone else, she thinks, will be wearing grown-up pretty clothes and she needs to compete.*Yeah, in a month, or a week, she’ll be back to normal. But first day is for first impressions!

The lady in the ad is standing next to the card sorter / collator, which was used to manage the cards that the computer punched itself, as output (which would be manipulated as you specified, so that the deck could then be used as input to anther program). I hated JCL (Job Control Language) with a passion, because the slightest error in that bizarre syntax of parentheses, commas, and semicolons would cause you program not even to be parsed, so you would have to wait until the operators gave you your printout (usually every hour during the day, but a lot less frequently on the overnight shifts!) and you started the whole thing over again.-Still, you didn’t have to fool with paper tape, the way we did on the PDP-10 that we used at the same time.

I found it kind of fun to plug the patchcords in novel ways to arrange the decks in sorting orders that were not anticipated when the data were originally created for a different purpose.-> We didn’t have a puncher on the IBM machine.>It was an extremely temperamental and unpredictable beast, let me tell you! The failure rate due to mis-punches was depressingly high. The machine that the lady is standing in front of would automatically read every card just after the puncher produced it, and then it would spew them all out and abort the job when it found one that didn’t check right, which was way too often,
