Grammatical errors in cartoon dialogue can always be passed off as the fault of the characters and not the cartoonist; maybe they accurately represent incorrect speech.
Spelling errors, however, can’t be as easily dismissed…
This will come as no surprise to my many fans out there, but I pay a lot of attention to things linquistic, and it seems to me that in recent decades there has been a growing use of the past tense form of some irregular verbs in place of the past participle. “Should have went”, “shouldn’t have did it”, “could have gave”, etc.
I believe that languages should be allowed to evolve, doest thou not? (Are you listening, French and Spanish Academies?) I have heard enough intelligent, educated people say things like “should have went” that I am open to the possibility this may be an early sign of the rules of English grammar in a century or two.
On the other hand, it may just be a sign of the further deterioration of the public educational system, like “should of”. Too bad I’ll never know for sure.
