So the only reason Gunther wants to come home is in fact to keep his Mom from dating? I hope Mrs. B. alerts the INS that he’s a Peruvian drug smuggler and he shouldn’t be allowed entry into the USA.
oh good grief, I don’t want Gunther to comeback home because he wants to c-block the new man in his mom’s life…………… that would subtract points of what I thought of him, he would go from 85 all the way down to 1(and that is a generous one), I AM GREATLY disappointed with him
Well, it has been a very rainy day today! So much so that it woke me up from my nap! Actually, more that one nap! We actually had a bit of a thunderstorm, which usually doesn’t happen around here. Back to the nap(s)! The NASCAR season is over, so I was reading a book about the history of Sitcoms, and I kept falling asleep because of the dark skies and the heavy rain! I finally got out of the fog of sleep when my hub came up the stairs in a really baaaadddd mood. Seems IS Katie was out and didn’t want to come back in…or listen to his order. He finally got upstairs and asked me to help him with her! Of course, just when I got downstairs, she was coming in all by herself, of course! She got scolded big-time and was in the “doghouse” for about ten minutes or so. She wanted to say she was sorry…who can resist big brown sad eyes?! Anyway, all is forgotten, and she is upstairs flopped on my husband’s electric chair. All is well…until her next big disobedience (she gets yelled at, and then that is that). We usually make up after awhile! At any rate, I am actually sleepy and its time to go upstairs where I can continue to read and then fall asleep under nice warm flannel sheets! ‘Nite all! ;) -——————————————————————-“You’d scarce expect one of my age To speak in public on the stage; And if I chance to fall below Demosthenes or Cicero, Don’t view me with a critic’s eye, But pass my imperfections by. Nah, I don’t think it is surprising that after seeing her mother only as mother for years, it comes as a shock that she is also a woman who would date. And give him a stepfather. I think Gunther’s reaction is pretty natural. Heck I suspect for most teenagers the thought that their parents could be sexually active is outright gross…
Buenos NOCHES, Sophia!Lima, Peru is in the same time zone as New York City.If Pitts is, as most of us believe, in California, and this spaghetti party is being thrown after work hours at say, 6pm.Then it is 9 o’clock in the evening in Lima. Are Rosa and Gunther working the late shift?(And I guess it’s good to be the boss’ niece’s boyfriend, you can Skype from work with impunity.)
I’m disappointed that Gunther is obsessing over his mother’s dating, but I’m also disappointed that Rosa decided to go ahead and work at her uncle’s clinic. I thought she would be involved with a charitable clinic by now, and Gunther would be all by himself at the plastic surgery clinic…
“You seem kinda gray” said no one, ever. No really, I checked Google, it’s not a phrase people say, unlike “you seem kinda blue”
Actually, you do hear it among paramedics/EMTs. Certain kinds of hypovolemic shock will turn a person’s skin color ashen gray. Which probably coincides with Gunther’s shock over his mother’s adventures…
You’re about to Discuss THIS with Rosa, AREN’T Gunther??
“SHE” Is ONLY Going to Try to Talk You OUT of Going Home and CONTINUE Sitting in that Pointless, Soul-Stealing Cubicle WITH HER, You TOOL!
WHY Don’t You Surprise US and Say NOTHING, GROW a Backbone, and Catch the Red-Eye Home.
….., OH, and when You get Home and Your Mom Kicks You OUT of Her House, MOVE In with the DeGroots! Brad’s Home Old Room is Empty and its right NEAR Luann’s, Hint, Hint, Hint.
So it seems Gunther has not even revealed his plan to return home to Rosa. He is destined to be a boy living in his mothers basement for all eternity. Boy, I hope I’m wrong.
Gunther – Your mom put her life on hold after your father left and now you expect her to just sit at home until she rots? Empty nest syndrome can be a blessing or a curse. She chose blessing.
Gunther’s mind image of Gray’s face is accurate and friendly. If he had some conceptions of Gray’s intentions I’m sure the face would have be distorted to reflect those ideas. Perhaps he IS trying to be non-judgmental and accepting of his mothers choices.
If we’re to believe this is the day after Gunther’s Skype session with his mom/friends, then he is the king of all party poopers. Will Luann ever forgive him for ruining her party? Will Quill! ever forgive him for ruining his Fosters spiked pasta?
ALTERNATIVE SCENARIO:++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Just to be creative, and to give an alternate interpretation to the “Gunther is a weenie” mindset….. What if the real story is that Gunther’s seemingly sweet, gentle, rational mother has had a history of dating men in the past that have been a) hurtful, b) currently married, or c) users and/or abusers…. and this has been a carefully hidden secret that Gunther has been dealing with most of his life? Perhaps the fact that “Ma” calls him “Mr. Gray” is a sign of her subservience? Perhaps “Mr. Gray” is a rich, married banker who is just out to have a fling and “Ma” is oblivious to the notion? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Perhaps Gunther is responding like he has in the past, finding some way to protect her from getting hurt again, or perhaps he is seeing in her behavior the symptoms of a return of her “mental illness” in regards to the dating issue? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Any thoughts?
Maybe we should just recognize Gunther is a Woose (not sure about sp.) and get on with it. Let him dribble his life away as he chooses. He he; he’s going to anyway; a comic strip entity.
Lighten up on Gunther, folks! In the compressed timescale of Toonland he has just now seen that Skype message on his computer! He needs a few minutes to collect his thoughts and then explain to Rosa why he is so upset. Maybe she will accompany him back to the USA for a brief confrontation with Mom (and, incidentally, the rest of the old Pitts H.S. gang); or maybe she will convince him to chill and let Mom live her own life!
are you Gray? would not work in English, as people use are you blue? or you seem kind of blue…………. but interestingly, in Spanish “Gris”(gray) is used the same way as blue(Azul) in English, por que estas tan gris?………. so actually the way is written in the spanish version of Luann makes more actual sense than the English version even thought the pun is much more obvious in English, it might work better in a Spanglish version of the strip
After my mothers’ death dad grieved (and moped) for 10 yrs, and because of his age and health I had to take care of him most of those 10 years. Thankfully, my husband loved his father in law.I’d have been thrilled to death to see dad even have coffee with another woman. Gunther needs to grow up.
Who’s paying for Gunther and Rosa to live in Peru? Did her parents agree to finance this misadventure instead of sending her to Yale? Does Gunther have a trust fund? The Berger family certainly doesn’t seem well-off financially, especially if Mrs. B introduces Mr. Gray as a gentleman “from work”, indicating that she is the family breadwinner. Rosa and Gunther can’t be earning wages in Peru, under the terms of their (very hastily granted) visas to do “volunteer work”.
Rosa y Gunther, stoked and adventurous as they were, have been in Peru for four months now; Uncle Whatshisname has still not returned from his conference in Spain, so they’re still corralled in a cubicle, the drudgery of which has served to cool Rosa’s anger at not helping the poor. And while Sophia promised to take the couple shopping, Gunther has apparently only chosen made-in-Peru plaid shirts over his usual brand instead of a new look of any sort.No wonder Gunther wants to come home; this is menial work in an exotic, new location which Evans has taken no steps to explore. “Mister Gray” is just a subconscious excuse to escape this poor decision on his part, and slide back into the "old Gunther " groove.
To me, “gray day” fits, as it’s a creative way of saying that someone seems to have something “heavy” on their mind, something clouding their usual countenance or ability to converse…..sort of the equivalent of a gray, heavy, “almost ready to rain” kind of sky. And when it turns into a steady downpour, it’s “all you see”, “all you hear”, and “all you know”. Until something comes along to break the clouds, that is….
“You seem kinda gray” said no one, ever. No really, I checked Google, it’s not a phrase people say…." ^A few years ago, who would have thought of “selfie as a new word? Not a word I enjoy, mind you, but my point is that every word had to be “coined” at one point or another. Happens in song lyrics all the time. A phrase gets introduced into society, because someone had the “bright stroke” to put certain words/phrases together…
"@PipeTobaccoAny thoughts?-“This scenario is too dark/interesting for Evans to consider it.”^Not exactly so! Bernice’s brother, Ben York comes to mind… – Also, Evans has always said that he “listens out” for things that others go though, including today’s current crop of teens. And a lot of people have had stories that they could relate to, in connection with what “Pipe” was suggesting. – Also, Greg has tackled the subjects of “date agression” (Miguel and Luann), also the situation where Luann “fell for” Stuart the lifeguard who was married, and he didn’t communicate it to her that he was, at least in a clear manner. – There’s also Bernice’s foray into dating (“Derrick the druggie”) and trying to convince someone to stop dabbling in drugs. – There are actually plenty of stories that are not “light fare” that Evans has tackled….
I, for one, am a little disappointed. I kept hoping that Rosa would have found her way out of that plastic surgery place and into an impoverished village to do what she came to Peru to do.
If Rosa’s uncle didn’t come up with a more fulfilling “volunteer” position than data entry, she and Gunther are intelligent enough to have found another charity to work for and make the sworn statements on their visa applications true.
Again, I was speaking of “dark” as in issues that are not “all about the gag”. of course those issues wouldn’t seem to be on the level of “nuclear threats/dealing with terrorists”! – But in terms of a comic strip, it’s in the dealing with relationships business, and is all treated relative to and subject to the newspaper syndicate and the general public perception/taste. The level of “intensity” should/would be understood …
No, Luann was saying no. Miguel was trying to be rough. She wasn’t debating, she was just unable to be firm enough, without a “quick save” from Gunther…. – Bernice was caught, but it was understood when Luann came forward, after Bernice’s “sheepish” attempts at trying to keep Derek liking her, and at the same time, thinking she could deal with it, by herself . – Ben York’s case was one modeled after what happened “IRL” with Evans in a “similar” vein. In addition, it caused some tension in Lu and Bern’s relationship…. – Luann wouldn’t have dated him, knowing his true status, which he neglected to make clear. She was impressed with dating an older man, but didn’t get involved with him, solely based on this. He “led her on”…
I suppose technically Rosa and Gunther are upholding the conditions of their visas simply by working at her uncles’ clinic, so long as they aren’t getting paid. After all, it is a medical facility, and they are volunteers. However, I doubt that Rosa would feel their time is being well spent, if that’s all they do. So they certainly could do actual volunteer work among the poor, after hours. After all, she and her uncle are practically strangers to each other, so there’s no reason for her to spend evenings visiting in his home, and I doubt that a romantic evening with Gunther is in the works, either.
Bernice almost died playing volleyball? Please tell me more about this arc…. it must have occurred during the years when my paper did not carry the comic, and I did not know of GoComics.
I came back here to say, one of you is obviously Greg Evans. Every single thing that makes no sense, you spend a lot of time trying to justify. No one says “You look gray” and you don’t try to reinvent North American slang to suit that purpose without being Greg Evans. -Greg, you’re doing a silly, silly job. Congratulations!
yea, most readers thought he was a predator because he seemingly intentionally flirted with Luann even though he was much older than Luann; but he did not mean to come across as flirting, he thought he was being funny and every character of Luann knew that
Suppose Mrs. B’s gentleman friend had been named Mr. Downs. Then if Rosa had told Gunther, “You look down today,” it would have made sense and the joke would have worked. However, in order for the joke to work as it stands, You look gray today" would have to make sense, and it doesn’t. If Mrs. B’s friend were Mr. Smith, would it have been funny for Rosa to tell Gunther “You look smith today”? No, because that would be nonsense. So is “You look gray”.
And hi, Caldonia! Hope all is well, wherever you spend your online time these days.
in one of the posts, I wrote the tinypic link to an image of today’s strip, but in “spanglish way” (basically combining the Spanish version with English version) that actually makes more sense of the “Gray gag” than the way is here and way it is in Spanish version……………….. and technically, Rosa is one who got something “worse”(in her mind) than what she thought she was entering into at Peru, while Gunther going by what he thought Peru was going to be, his situation is better…… and “volunteer visa”? where is link to that? Rosa’s parents led her to believe her Uncle would allow her to do “volunteer work” but I am sure because her stay in a luxurious hotel and than I am guessing both Gunther and Rosa are in her Uncle’s place, that they get paid or get a least a big allowance, and for Gunther, her mom already got his passport long before he thought of going to Peru at last minute, and that is all we know………….. so I think is safe to say they get paid or are given allowances by Rosa’s uncle
The sexual tension between Knute and Crystal is playful and they’ll do it whenever the mood hits. The tension between Luann and (fill in the blank) is amusing, because she collects loves like some people collect stamps. The sexual tension between Gunther and Rosa is like a tire slowly going flat. Tiffany is just a display model, not for actual use. Gotta’ watch Bernice, though, because given a little encouragement, she will jump some guy’s bones like a starving tiger.
Yeah, and they really helped to “flesh out” Luann. Bernice and them, too… It’s probably no coincidence that it’s when he won his Reuben in 2003, just after those three characters were brought along….
Forr me, though, I like when Toni came on the scene, and when Brad first met her. It was a nice turn for him… I like Toni’s “changes” over the years, and how (unlike some girls out there) she finally “saw the light” and appreciated Brad over Dirk…..
> how (unlike some girls out there) she finally “saw the light” and appreciated Brad over Dirk…..>This is the way Greg Evans wants the world to be, rather than the way it is. Similarly, Luann will eventually “see the light” and appreciate Gunther over Quill / Aaron Hill etc., because in the Evansverse, “niceness” (even in dweebs like Gunther and schlubs like Brad) ought to win out over “coolness”, no matter what happens in real life. And beautiful cheerleaders who maybe don’t see the world like that (e.g., Tiffany) are therefore terrible people with low morals who should be shunned, ridiculed, and made to be losers at every turn.
actually was extremely easy, with changing just the last 2 dialog boxes, putting essentially what Greg put as what Rosa said in the Spanish version, and adding Gray? to what Gunther said(which was said in the Spanish version)

Sure… if you like the stress of getting up to change channels… or the added stress of remembering that the remote is in the freezer… don’t ask…..

This arc is disturbing because of what it’s implying about Gunther’s character. Why is he so threatened by his mom having a friend or going on a date?

Bernice almost died playing volleyball? Please tell me more about this arc…. it must have occurred during the years when my paper did not carry the comic, and I did not know of GoComics.
JayBluE about 10 years ago
LOL, yeah! – And that arc was also notable for the transition into Bern meeting Zane for the first time…

The Evansverse is the Revenge of the Nerds.
wiselad about 10 years ago
actually was extremely easy, with changing just the last 2 dialog boxes, putting essentially what Greg put as what Rosa said in the Spanish version, and adding Gray? to what Gunther said(which was said in the Spanish version)
