Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for December 13, 2014
Transcript:
Calvin: "Ok, Hobbbes, as my lawyer, you'll need to review the facts of my case" Hobbes: "RIght. We'll try to establish that you were insane at the time of the alleged crimes" Calvin: "We're not copping an INSANITY plea, you moron! We're saying I'm INNOCENT!" Hobbes: "Insulting an attorney is a penal offense, so watch it, buster" Calvin: "You're supposed to argue that I haven't been bad this year, and I deserve to be on Santa's "good" list!" Hobbes: "If THAT'S our case, I advise you to settle out of court" Calvin: "In a minute, you and I are going to settle this out of DOORS"

A weak case, Calvin. Maybe even nonexistent.

By necessity, beautiful relationships must be tested on a regular basis.

For a frightening moment, Calvin’s behaviour seemed a lot like our mass killer Anders Behring Breivik during his trial. It was really bizarre.

Calvin, the big guy in the red suit already knows you have been bad, so just listen to Hobbs and go for the plea deal, you’ll be better for it

Is it SOP for lawyers to stick their tongues out at their clients? If not, it should be.

Calvin needs to be good to his lawyer first.

Part of what puts Watterson head and shoulders above the rest: this looks like a simple joke about lawyers and clients, but Watterson is also examining how people change when they are handed a lilttle power. It happens fairly often in this strip — Calvin grants Hobbes authority as co-leader of the GROSS club, or as captain of the opposing sports team, or as his lawyer, and instead of making sure that all goes as Calvin wants, Hobbes immediately starts living the role while Calvin loses control over his destiny. It’s the story of the politician and his constituents. They think they’re electing a representative, but once he/she has some power, the constituents’ real interests go by the wayside.
