Pavlov’s cats? It was in fact the first thing that crossed my mind, even before seeing the comments; but I have to agree that “Pavlov’s cats” isn’t the funniest or even most obvious of jokes. Perhaps that’s why the McCoys thought it was funny, because it wasn’t obvious.
