Joe Pyle: Hi, Victoria... Ready to go? We have a reservation at Pier 77 in Cape Porpoise... Victoria: Umm... Why are you wearing sweatpants to such a nice restaurant, Joe? Joe: Because none of my good pants fit now... But since we'll be sitting the whole time, I figured it wouldn't really matter... Bob: Hey, it sounds perfectly logical to me, Joe. Joe: Somehow that really doesn't help right now, Bob...

Tuck in the drawstring, if there’s a next time. Good to see Bob was available at the last minute,

He should have gone to the store before the date instead and picked up pants that fit.

She has a point, no woman in her right mind would let her guy out looking like a fool.

Let Victoria stay at home and eat crackers. Her standards are too high ..

To women is all about appearance and how they think they are being judged by other women……substance versus style.

Should have skipped the fancy restaurant and gone someplace more casual and try again another day. Although I can see being put out by all the time it probably took her to get ready going to waste. Another reason not to wear makeup or have fussy hair! As if I need another one…

With so many people running around in public with their pajama pants on and thinking it’s appropriate attire, I would think sweatpants would pass

I just love that dumb grin on his face in panel 3. It reminds me of… oh yeah, me. I tried the same bleeep thing with swim trunks. Same result. Women.

ChuckTrent64 said Is that Richard Nixon he’s drinking with?
Nah, just a regular in the strip. Of course, given the sweatpants-related gaffe, maybe he should be drinking with Plaxico Burris…
BloomCo over 14 years ago
After having to put up with women wearing stretch pants, and stirrup pants and those awful clown looking jump suits a decade ago, maybe a guy wearing sweat pants ought to be given a break.
freeholder1 over 14 years ago
No sweat, Joe. There are lots of fish in the sweat pants sea. Of course, even they don’t bit on the drawstring without the proper bait.

hmmm….lets see. which sport coat goes with sweat pants.

Time to hit the gtm Joe and go to that Men’s shop w/ the ‘guy with the beard’ who says “I Garantee it.”

Joe should have tucked in the drawstrings and CERTAINLY should have ironed a crease in each leg. She might have gone along with it then …
Women will accommodate a little goofy if you make an effort.
Note that I said a “little.”

somebodyshort, I do too (yoga pants) but I’m a theatre teacher working on a dusty stage and constantly moving. :)
The easiest fix would have been buying some new ones…but if he’s like most guys (and a lot of gals), he probably waited till the last minute to get dressed and ran out of time.
If I was Victoria, I woulda been a little ‘harumphed’ espec if I’d been looking forward to dinner out, but would have suggested chilling at home. I usually don’t care much about other people’s clothing… but sweats with the string… that’s a weeeee bit much for a nice restaurant.

I’d like to say something about people wearing pajamas on the street but then I would sound like my mother.
Potrzebie over 14 years ago
I guess one of those Haiwaian shirts wouldn’t conceal the sweatpants?

He Should’s gotten one of those pants with the expanding wasitline.

Pier 77 - Ahh…they make a mean Cubano.
lazygrazer over 14 years ago
Maybe Victoria would have found a kilt more acceptable. Or bib overalls.
JanLC over 14 years ago
I don’t mind sounding like my mother. Wearing your pajama bottoms in public is just plain stupid, lazy and unacceptable. It makes me wonder (once again) just what our society is coming to.

Pier 77? trying to sound holier than Pier 39 (sf fisherman’s wharf)?
benbrilling over 14 years ago
If he didn’t have time to go to a store he could have just got some scissors and cut a big slot in the back of his slacks (where his coat would hide it).
vexatron1984 over 14 years ago
Some of you anti-Victoria people seem to think that she dumped him or he dumped her. I don’t know where you got that from. He’s just in the dog house for now.
Victoria is great, and the comic wouldn’t be funny if she just accepted it.

@treered- Google it.

I’m guessing you guys who are scared of Victoria haven’t been to a really nice restaurant. There’s a chance they wouldn’t even seat Joe if he walked in wearing sweatpants. I don’t know if it’s true anymore, but it used to be that the fussier restaurants had sport coats to loan to men who didn’t realize there was a dress code. I don’t think they have loaner pants, though ;). So it might not be all Victoria over-reacting. Though if it were me, I wouldn’t have canceled the date; we’d just go someplace casual. But there’s no punchline in that outcome, no funny.
By the way, why are you guys so threatened by Victoria? You don’t say a peep when Danae cops an attitude but you realize that Danae is going to grow up to be very much like Victoria, right?
alan.gurka over 14 years ago
They make dress pants with elastic wastebands. Maybe not in his size, though.
g6793 over 14 years ago
H’mmm. I think maybe Joe will have to either lose weight before the wedding (he and Victoria are engaged now) or else get some bigger pants. Somehow I just don’t see him wearing sweats (or jammie bottoms) to get married in…
Trebor39 over 14 years ago
Get out now Joe, while you’ve still got a pair.

I know I said wear the sweat pants yesterday – but I said “DRESS SWEATPANTS” – not the ones that tie in front. Victoria better take him shopping.

Oh, sweats are so DANGEROUS. You can never tell when you are growing out of your street clothes until its waaaay too late.

Joe is in a bar having a drink - looks like iced tea to me though. :-) And for a bar, he is way overdressed in a sports jacket.
The other character, once again, is Bob, Joe’s brother. And worst-selling author of “Mary Trotter” (or whatever variant he decided on) “and the Cauldron of Cash”.
Oh, and also a lawyer.

My BF was partial to polyester suits (not a great look) but like Joe, at least wore good shirts and a nice tie. On the other hand another guy who wears jeans on a date when I’m all dressed up (even when we were just in our late 30’s) is entirely declasse (unacceptable).
