Frazz by Jef Mallett for February 02, 2015
Transcript:
Frazz: Happy......Random wholly manufactured arbitrary holiday that's harmless and kind of fun and doesn't cost a small fortune or potentially cause hurt feelings. Mr. Spaetzle: And warns us of the far less benign one in 12 days. Frazz: Any Valentine's plans?

This year will be much more complex than the last dozen or so. With that stupid 50 shades movie coming out on that date, do you pay attention and play the humor card or will it get you in more trouble than it is worth. Can not win either way it appears.

Itâs sad, in a way, that you donât celebrate the love and joy of witnessing meteorological divination by obese burrowing rodents.
Armitage72 about 10 years ago
Celebrate by watching one of Bill Murrayâs best comedies.

Iâm single, so I actually spent more on today than I do on Valentines day. Had to get the sausage to eat for âground hogâ day.

Itâs not wholly manufactured. Imbolc, Candlemas, ç«æ„ is as real as the solstice and equinox. Ancient agricultural societies needed to plan their spring planting. Watching for hibernating animals to emerge was one more sign.

Coincidentally, the new, larger hamster cage came in today. So, happy rodentsâ day.

It might as well be divination these days. The âofficialâ groundhog is a pampered pet and probably has no instincts or exposure to the outdoors at all. It certainly has no application half a continent away. Here in the Colorado foothills, I donât think I have ever seen signs of spring in early February.

Night-Gaunt49: I was so aggrieved over your comment that I almost burned my sausage.

Once again, Frazz chimes in to tell people theyâre celebrating holidays wrong.

Here in Pugetopolis we can never be sure of our weather. We sort of â vaguely - have three seasons that stagger haltingly into one another. One frustrating summer day, I was moved to write the following: I hate to see summer arrive/ because itâs over too soon/and the fall that quickly follows/turns immediately into winter. I hate winter because the cold lingers too long/and goes deeply into what should be spring/making it such a long time/before the warmth of summer comes again. :) ( Who says being a retired English teacher is boring?)

Oops! Sorry about the strike throughs. At least now I know how they work.

As a Science teacher, I must point out that there will ALWAYS be seven weeksâ of winter between the 2nd of February and the Spring Equinox.
As an aside â to our friends in the Southern Hemisphere (and I know youâre out there) â do you have a similar âGround Hog Dayâ event in early August?

And before the Groundhog, it was Candlemas Day.

Maybe we will see Principal Spaetzelâs wife? That would be fun!

Iâve said it beforeâIâm amazed that Caulfield (nor Jef Mallett, apparently) has not yet researched the background of âGroundhogâs DayââAKA Candlemas.
