When my two youngest children began reading, I gave them small atlases, marked with a highlighter the entire 750 mile trip to the grandparents. Two or 3 times a year we went and they never again said “are we there yet”. They followed the map and watched the road signs and enjoyed knowing where we were. Great fun and they learned that the top of a map is North (at least in this hemisphere), and how to read a map! I marked the state pages with sticky notes, numbered 1 thru 4, so they could easily follow the route. Try it on your next trip!

If I hear that one more time, we are going to stop right here and turn around.
