$50 is nothing but then again I am surprised they paid her at all. Normally requests for articles or photography are along the lines, " while we do not have funding for photos, poems, etc (you pick), we will credit your work so that you have exposure." Try paying the bills with exposure.
In 4th grade my teacher taught us how to fill out checks. She explained every line. My husband was never taught, nor were my girls (at least not by the school, I of course showed them how). Since I was 9-10 during 4th grade (the same age as Michael) perhaps his teacher taught him as well.
murcudgeon: U was wondering that too. Helpful friends dealing with our culture shock in Canada, told us, "You can spell it either way – except it is always cheque. I don’t think they have checks – a check mark was a “tic”.

Junk mail, huh? (Michael, don’t you know it’s a federal offense to look through someone else’s mail?)

Michael, this better not be your idea of an April Fool’s joke. Or you might find standing is your way of life for next 6 months or so.

$50 for a poem?! That’s an insane amount for a slush pile submission…

Michael gained his knowledge through the magic of the artist/illustrator… You DO know that this is just a comic strip, right? Not real life?
