Because sports teams tend not to use edible animals as mascots.

Geese can be mean. They chomp with their serrated bills and then turn their heads upside down. They can rip out a good chunk of flesh if you’re not careful.

Even though I am a woman in her 40s the South Carolina University’s name ALWAYS makes me snicker like a 13 year old boy…

My aunt and uncle had a Canada Goose as a guard “dog” for a few years. Problem was it would attack visiting relatives and friends. Hmm, maybe there was a message there.

Shouldn’t that be “Canadian” goose? Odd for Mallett to make such a mistake.

Ewal Doh: Are Hoyas poisonous? Not usually. Their full name, Hoya Saxis, means stone wall..PocosDad: Mine too. I actually met an alumnus in a McKinney, TX, grocery store and scored major points with him in that I had actually seen a banana slug in the wild (Vancouver, BC) and he never had. The encounter was occasioned by his wearing a school T-shirt.

Board sorely needs an “ignore user” button…. so many interesting posts (the geoducks!?) lost amidst the daily noise from the usual suspects.

I have no bone in the matter (my university mascots have been Pumas, White Wolves and Rams), but Boilermakers always make me laugh.

Friend of mine is a Cajun by birth. When she first came to live in the DC metro area, her first question about the UMD sports teams was, “Why’d they name their teams the Twerps?”

Bulls and Rams (beef & mutton!) are certainly edible. So for that matter are Broncos & Colts if you don’t mind horsemeat.
