As far as everyone grabbing sections of the paper, it reminds me of our family when I was younger. The Colour Comics have always been on Saturday in Toronto. (The newspapers didn’t use to publish on Sunday here.) The comics were 8 pages (two sheets folded). My two brothers and I usually took those apart into two sheets to read them because we couldn’t wait before any of the others read them first.
I don’t comment often but I do look forward to Pequod, Avenger & Ashmael’s artwork with prose. My skills do not lean toward the arts, but I do know art when I see it or in this case read it. Thanks to all of you for making the comments worth reading everyday! :)
Back in the day, our family really did enjoy various sections of the newspaper like that.Behind Joe Tracy’s hand in the second main panel – a portrait of a “family member” who looks very much like Chester Gould!
This is Mike and Joe’s nod to the hey day of newspapers, and i like it. But,even if the family had all TV and radio turned off, you’d think Tracy would know about this before he opened up the Sunday paper. After all, he and Sam were well aware of the potential for trouble with this train a couple of days ago. By the time the story got into print, the cops would already be on the job, wouldn’t they? But this is still a fun glimpse into Tracy’s home life.Tess must not realize Johnny is missing or hurt – she’s acting as if this is a routine assignment.
Why would Dick Tracy have to learn to learn about the gold theft from reading a newspaper? By the time it shows up in a newspaper, it’s old news. Wouldn’t his own police force have informed him of it right away?
Re: garage door openers — Also, make sure everything is reset. Too many people do NOT do this, which makes it easy for crooks to open their garage doors and, usually, gain access to the house.
Sounds like the gold car was sent off on a siding somewhere.Of course, hiding and moving a billion in gold is going to be pretty hard, and then there’s getting cash for it…The Blackhearts are sure to move in on the operation. I wonder if Jimmy will live long enough to see a dollar from his heist. That’s assuming he pulled it off, and not the Blackhearts!
The robbery has taken place off-panel, which I didn’t expect. We don’t know where in relation to Tracyville the robbery was discovered, nor do we know how Jimmy Choo Shooz pulled it off. Maybe Sgt. Doherty will share his expertise on jurisdiction as it relates to railroad lines and cargo. We know the train was scheduled to pass through Tracyville. I assume it was robbed within city limits..I like the glimpse of J. Straightedge Trustworthy, as Team Tracy celebrates the bygone era of the big Sunday paper being plucked apart by the family. Tess is off to work. As others have noted, she shows no sign of distress over a missing or hospitalized colleague. Johnny may be taking an extended dirt nap. If he is not yet missed, he soon will be..Unlike Tracy, Jumbler didn’t have to share his paper. Crypto is illiterate! Still, the pooch is no fool. He knows the word “pastry.” Wrrf!
Thanks to VistaBill, Gweedo, Night-Gaunt49, cpalmeresq, Neil Wick, William Weedman, Starman1948, Willy007, Sydney Phillips, John Russell and JPuzzleWhiz for the kind words. Very much appreciated.
Not only is that a picture of Chester Gould in the second panel, but if you look carefully at the comics page being taken away from Tracy, you see that the JSTrustworthy strip on the front mirrors what is in the top panel next to the Crimestoppers Textbook! Such attention to detail!
And, is that a Sunday strip of Sawdust below JST on that page, perhaps?
A terrific Sunday strip today. I like seeing these slice of life side trips into the lives of our characters. It is timed so that it is not interrupting the flow of the story. I have a lot of memories of the Sunday papers and would often get out of town papers for the great of comic strips available then. The NY Daily News just isn’t the same without Dick Tracy on the front page or even inside.

Striking resemblance between the harried daddy Tracy in the last panel and the J.S. Trustworthy in the throwaway panel….
It appears as though all the security measures weren’t enough to foil Jimmy’s grand scheme. Now what, detective?

Yep, that’s the way Sunday’s used to be with a nice fat Sunday paper and a relaxing afternoon. Now the paper looks like a ad circular in the mail.

The Billion Dollar Limited comes rolling down the tracks
Carrying a heavy load, gold bullion stored in stacks.
Sam and Tracy on the job, gold consignment front page news
On the other side of town schemes stout Jimmy Choo Shooz
The rotund boss of the train heist, smart planning of his ruse
To seize the gold takes vision bold, an insider he can use.
Some poor schmuck with bills to pay, nothing left to lose
Swimming in self-pity, singing long and loud the blues.
Jimmy used to living large, cigars and dames and booze
Hatches now a brilliant scheme, steal gold yet leave no clues.
Pays respects to BB-Eyes, crafty crook who’s paid his dues
Asks a favor this one time, forbearance he’ll not abuse.
BB touts Blackhearts’ depth chart, enables Shooz to choose
A rich deep pool of talent to assist Jimmy Choo Shooz.
The Billion Dollar Limited went rolling down the track
Gold car up and disappeared, no sign it’s coming back.
