As I was saying yesterday, the point of the ruse was to force the train to stop. We know that Jimmy had to have done that too, because Owen said that the train had to have been stopped.

Now that the train is stopped, the crucial part comes. What do they do with the gold. We don’t know what Jimmy’s boys did with the gold, except that they transferred it (to another vehicle?).

Will it also show how they got arrested and the recovered Gold, if any of that happened ?..

We shall see. We don’t even know if they got arrested, but if they did, Jimmy would not have been too smart to copy that part of the crime. We also don’t know what happened to the gold in 1924, so we’ll want to find that out.

“Stand and deliver!” —The classic highwayman’s demand, here applied to train robbing in the heartland. The 1924 caper by Ongo and his cobbled-together gang is so far alarmingly prosaic. We have yet to see why it is so special: maybe the size of the haul? Maybe its non-recovery by The Law? I trust we shall see….

Ongo writing that book reminds me of someone in our time writing a book titled “If I Did It”. Sold about the same number of copies, though!

    Morning, Tracyville!

I’m currently writing a western novel and I’m finding it very difficult to avoid the old cliches, like Stand and deliver! or Reach for the sky! or Head him off at the pass!

Has it been noted before that Abe Ongo was a character in ``Derby Dugan’s Depression Funnies’’? It has? Ok – I’ll go back to my corner now. Move along. Nothing to see here.

    Dear Proofreader,

You don’t spell some things wrong — you spell them wrongly.

And even comic strip editors should correct bad grammar.

I love seeing the original robbery as the means of explaining what went down in the present. Will it also show how they got arrested and the recovered Gold, if any of that happened ?..Assuming this story arc is based on the 1924 Newton Gang train robbery—and it seems to be—most of the stolen goods were recovered, with the exception of $100,000.

Fans of the two-time Harvey Award winning Dick Tracy may be interested in this new biography of the award’s namesake:.Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created MAD and Revolutionized Humor in America.“Harvey Kurtzman created MAD, and MAD revolutionized humor in America. Kurtzman’s groundwork as the original editor, artist, and sole writer of MAD provided the foundation for one of the greatest publishing successes of the 20th century. But how did Kurtzman invent MAD, and why did he leave it shortly after it burst nova-like onto the American scene? Bill Schelly’s heavily researched biography finally and fully answers these question for the first time. Through fresh interviews with Kurtzman’s colleagues, friends and family, including Hugh Hefner, Al Feldstein, James Warren, R. Crumb, Jack Davis, Gilbert Shelton, and many others, and an examination of Kurtzman’s personal archives, this book tells the true story of one of the 20th century’s greatest humorists. His family life, an FBI investigation during the McCarthy Era, his legal battles with William M. Gaines (publisher of MAD), all are revealed for the first time. Rich with anecdotes, from Kurtzman’s Brooklyn beginnings to his post-MAD years, when his ceaseless creativity produced more innovations: new magazines, a graphic novel, and “Little Annie Fanny” in Playboy." Available from the Fantagraphics Books website..Kurtzman Book.Gweedo and Sydney: Now that’s poetry!

Off topic but I just learned today that I have been nominated for the Joseph Jefferson Award as Best Scenic Designer.

For those who don’t know, the Jeff Awards are Chicago’s equivalent to New York’s Tony Awards.

It is even an honor to be nominated because out of the hundreds of theatrical productions in Chicago each year, there are only 5 nominees in each category. Although I have never won, this is the third time I have been nominated.
