In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
I think most if not all missed the point of Janiceâs gathering of the flowers. When I was a kid, we picked a lot of flowers and put them in a big bucket to take to the grave yards. Back then it was called âDecoration Day.â
" before the fall of the Roman Republic they were in the same state. Internally and Republic, externally and Empire.".You probably meant:
Internally a Republic, externally an Empire. The Roman Empire was an empire for hundreds of years and parts of it still stand..Just because we share some traits with them doesnât mean we have to share our fates with them. and even if we do, that would predict several hundred more years (also unlikely)
Iâm sorry, Nightie, but do you mean German National Socialist goose-stepping or Soviet goose-stepping? My observation is that only socialist countries goose-step.
Do you know the history of the Leftâs pre-occupation with âimperialismâ? Marx in the 1848 âManifestoâ predicted the imminent collapse of capitalism, but when it hadnât happened by the 1865 âKapitalâ, he needed an excuse. He settled on the idea that the actual imperialism of Britain, France, et al., was keeping capitalism alive, and the Lefties have been railing against it ever since. Americaâs minor foray into actual imperialism was a result of the destruction of Spanish Imperialism. And of course, the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe wasnât imperialism, no, not at all, he said sarcastically.
I thought the flower reference was a clever but subdued salute to the âhonored deadâ, but the history of âDecoration Dayâ is lost on people who only know Memorial Day as âthe âunofficialâ start of summerâ.
pschearer: No, imperialism, not socialism, which you apparently define as anyone who claims the term (donât get run over by five-legged sheep) . The goose-step was developed by the British in the 19th century as a test for drunkenness. This was the peak of their imperial power. Your other two examples came later (20th century).

Do you Americans observe Nov 11 Remembrance Day as much as Memorial Day? Up here in Canada, Nov 11 is a big deal.
