Brad: "Nothing. You and I don't really have this holiday together" Shannon: "It feels wrong not to have a holiday..." Brad: "How does "Happy adult-and-kid-who-aren't-related-but-hang-out-a-lot day" sound?"

How do you celebrate this âholidayâ â by taking a sledgehammer and knocking walls down?
JayBluE over 9 years ago
No, donât really need some âholidayâ to learn to appreciate someoneâŠ. never take for granted the people that are good to you, every dayâŠ. â All the people who give and love because they want to, and not just the people who âdo something or give you somethingâ- but the friends who are family, the family who are friendsâŠ.

Brad missed a great opportunity here. He kinda is the only real âfather-figureâ Shannon has. He should have said thanks, hugged her back, then reminded her to tell Jonah that too, instead of shooting her down the way he did.

Bradâs not thinking it through.Biologically, heâs no more a dad then Toni is a mom. HoweverâŠhe seems to have missed the fact he and Toni adopted her in all but legalities.

Alas This shows how very much Jonah has let down his daughter. Shannon, for all her occasional brattiness, is very lucky to have Bwad and Aunt Toni looking out for her and giving her some semblance of parentingâŠ.

Bwad, you may not be her father but you are the closest she has to a dad.

Bwad isnât too nice there. Since he is engaged to Toni, he is essentially a relative. We donât see how Shannonâs real dad treats her. Probably would be disturbingâŠ

I see where Greg is trying to go with this, and I applaud Brad for trying to remind Shannon who her real father is, and to give him his props. But I think Shannon already knows the difference between the two. She doesnât call him âDadâŠ.â but âBwad.â
Still, Shannonâs intentions seem to be quite clear. She wants Bwad to be Dad. Perhaps Gregâs/Karenâs also. At this point, I think it would be cruel for them to not let Brad/Toni adopt Shannon. Sheâs come such a long way. At least, hopefully, theyâll be some kind of extended visitation.
If they do get to adopt Shannon, I hope that, eventually, Brad/Toni have their own biological children. Probably best to wait a bit until Shannon is a bit older, and could start to learn some of the responsibilities of âmotherhood.â Sheâd be involved in raising her younger siblings and, hopefully, it would result in less âsibling rivalry/resentmentâ on her part.
Anyway, Happy Fatherâs day to all those good Dads out there!

Brad is still a little young and inexperienced, and he doesnât yet appreciate that as a father figure heâs important in her life and deserving of her wishing him a happy Fatherâs Day. Heâll get it eventually.

Câmon Brad â loosen up. You know where this is heading, that little one loves you to bits. Remember shopping for Valentineâs cards a couple of years ago?
I think he knowsâŠ. but he also knows he canât fully claim her just yet⊠and it pains him⊠just a little. Itâs important (at least for now) for Shannon to remember who her real father is and to respect him for that, as long as he retains that roll.
That said, Iâd be sorely disappointed if this doesnât end in Shannon being adopted by Brad/Toni.

Brad is Shannonâs dad, Jonah was just a sperm donor. A dad is the person who raises you, cares for you, teaches you and loves you.

There have been lots of âBrad is more of a father to Shannon than Jonah isâ comments today, We donât know that. We see Shannon with Brad only when Toni is baby-sitting, which is probably 5% of the time. In the 95% of the time when Shannon and Jonah are at home together, theirs could be a normal single-parent family life. The one thing we have seen demonstrated repeatedly is that Brad and Toni would be irresponsible parents for Shannon (and presumably for their own kids).

What makes Tiff like she has always been â constantly worried about her looks, boasting and strutting, yet clearly jealous of Luann â is key to almost all the strips that have ever featured her. .(Explanations would involve Tiffâs mother, too, of course. We know even less about her.)

Brad â You are wrong on SO many levels:*1) Shannon is trying to bond with youâ reply in kind.2) You are not her biological dad, but so what? You are a better kind of âdadâ to herâ one who spends time with her and teaches her things she needs to know. Fatherâs Day is a great day to celebrate ALL the men who have helped make us the people we are.3) I wish âHappy Fatherâs Dayâ even to womenâ we too are celebrating the great men in our lives!4) Youâre Shannonâs coach, teacher, adviser, friend, disciplinarianâ sounds like a dad to me.

Whoa, thatâs cold. I have the best stepdad in the world, who has always been wonderful to me, better than my biological father. Donât correct her, Brad, just be thankful! Sheâs young and she looks up to an important male figure⊠thatâs a compliment, and something of an emotional risk on her part, too! Lots of people who arenât literally biological fathers get Fatherâs Day cards and wishes. Heck, when I was shopping for my (step) Dadâs card, I saw grandpa and uncle and vaguer âman who I look up toâ cards.

Get used to it, Brad. If Shannonâs gonna be spending a lot of time with Toni, youâre going to be the closest thing to a dad that sheâll know. Donât blow it.That said, this dayâs always a little weird for me. I donât have any children. I do have a stepson, who was 21 when I married his mother. So he really didnât need a whole lot of raising from me. His two kids do know me as Grandpa, however.

Look, itâs obvious to everyone that the Evanses are trying to steer public opinion so that all the readers will be overjoyed when newlyweds Brad and Toni adopt Shannon as their daughter. But Iâm not buying into it. The only evidence presented that Jonah does a poor job as a single father is the âHalloween partyâ arc. In that weekâs strips, we were told that Jonah usually leaves his daughter alone in a bedroom while he attends a Halloween party for adults in the other part of the house. Thatâs certainly no atmosphere for a kid, so what do you want him to do other than leave her by herself in the bedroom? (1) Not go to the party at all? Maybe, but what if this is a party for all the cast in a play in which he is acting, at the directorâs house? Would it be responsible for him to decline the invitation, at the risk of offending his boss? So the alternative is (2) get a baby-sitter. This is exactly what happens, when Brad offers to take Shannon for the whole evening.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 9 years ago
But it truly is amazing, considering that actually renting the space, bringing it up to code, renovating it as a gallery, and paying the insurance, utilities, etc., will cost 20 to 30 times as much as they have to spend on it. Amazing!
wiselad over 9 years ago
seismic, a lot of times the undertone done by Brad and most of all by his sister is that Jonah does not take responsibility of his daughter, but rather sees her as an âobligation that he wishes he could give to someone elseâ and usually does, mostly to his sister, and âifâ we consider her Lindy Lewis cousin (Mrs Lewis or Mr Lewis might be Shannonâs mom sibling) back from 1996, he sometimes gives his daughter to her? or at least when Shannon was youngerâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ.. in strips we have to a lot of times give more weight than in real life to âthe image givenâ as it is usually what the writer/artist wants to INTENTIONALLY portray
Lara Fabans Premium Member over 9 years ago
Chalk me up to another one that felt Brad missed an opportunity. Thereâs biological sperm donors and men who step into the role who act as fatherâs, and Brad is an awesome father to Shannon. (i was adopted)

Brad and Toni have been irresponsible caregivers for Shannon on multiple occasions. I donât think their adopting Shannon is necessarily in her best interest.

-* venture a guess that it will turn out to be Ann Eiffel.*
Iâm responding to this so many hours after it was posted that there will probably never be a chance that youâll see it and answer, but didnât Shannon bite Ann Eiffelâs finger during one of the kerfluffles at Bradâs former job? Wouldnât Ann have spoken up at that time about being the mother? And wouldnât Toni have been aware of it?
SactoSylvia over 9 years ago
Bradâs role vis a vis Shannon is difficult and fraught with minefields. Brad doesnât want to usurp the real fatherâs role; and I suspect he and Toni still hope Jonah will âfather upâ despite all the evidence to the contrary. I donât think Bradâs response is about wanting to distance himself from Shannon as much as it âs about not wanting to cause problems with Jonah.
