Calvin thought he could handle it, but he quickly discovered that he was in over his head, as things ballooned out of control. It’s similar to those who have taken out mortgages (especially balloon mortgages), only to discover that they are under water. Or those who devote everything to trying to become famous but instead are only able to make a very brief splash before they are washed up.

Notice that there’s nothing whatsoever in those 1st 2 panels to make you think the balloon is filled with water. Nonetheless, we all knew it was, didn’t we?Au Contraire! Look a bit closer. The balloon in panel one is very slightly deformed. In panel two is is significantly deformed. Filled with air the balloon would be perfectly symmetrical. Also, a balloon filled with air would not have the mass to be tossed up or to fall back down as implied by the movement marks.

He’ll never learn how to toss a water balloon and catch it without breaking if he doesn’t try.
In true Thomas Edison fashion, he just discovered one more way that doesn’t work.
