Calvin: "I refuse to take out the garbage! I have the right to do whatever I want, all the time!"
Dad: "No you don't"
Calvin: "I don't?"
Calvin: "Well it sure OUGHT to be a right"
Where I live, this is actually said by doting mums and grandmums about the toddlers….“they’re kids, you have to let them do what they want!” Then the kids start school and Mum wonders why they’re such brats who never listen or obey on the slightest thing.
Calvin’s Dad won’t let him get away with that kind of trash talk.To those who want to do political trash talk on the Calvin and Hobbes site, whether conservative or liberal: Please go elsewhere.

Welcome to the real world Calvin. The rest of your life you’ll be working. So make peace with it now. Taking out the garbage is not that hard. I do it all the time.
Calvin, even as an adult, you’ll ‘GET STUCK WITH TAKING OUT THE GARBAGE’. It is the only ‘RIGHT’ they you’ll have as a adult male particularly if you have an adult female wife ! ! !
Yeah, those silly Mexicans, thinking we actually mean what it says on the Statue of Liberty. We should send that thing back to France, since we don’t mean a word of it any more.
That’s the thing about “natural tights” as opposed to “God-given rights.” – New rights can be discovered all the time. All you need is 5 Supremes to agree and BAZINGA! – new rights for everyone,
I get a kick out of the political people commenting in here sometimes. Like ideology is black and white anymore. One group puts down the other for doing exactly the same thing they are.
Politics exists for the simple reason that a country needs to have a way to get things done. It shouldn’t be about bashing my neighbor over the head with what I believe.
Scrap the party system. One citizen (and by this I mean an adult who contributes to his/her community and takes part in shaping his/her world) one vote. The representative should do just that, REPRESENT his/her constituents and not some “party line”.
This doesn’t just apply to the United States either. We of the Great White North (or used to be, until global warming kicked into high gear) should do the same.
I now relinquish the soap box for the next conservative, liberal, anarchist, socialist or idealist.
When I was a kid my mom would ask me if I’d like to take out the garbage. I didn’t like taking out the garbage, so I would caper around and say, “Oh boy! Can I? Really? Please, please, please!” Mom put up with the sarcasm since I did it anyway.
When I had kids of my own I’d ask, “What’s today?” and it would dawn on them: “It’s garbage day!” as if it were some sort of holiday.
I remember coming back from a long and tiring overseas business trip. A travel companion joked, “I’m so tired I don’t know if I can handle my husbandly duties.” I responded, “Aw, c’mon. How much energy does it take to make coffee and take out the garbage?”
I love watching adults who should know better throw hissy fits; it’s one of the very few things that helps justify my ever feeling superior to anyone. Unfortunately, I don’t know whose hissy fit you’re referring to so I missed it. Shucks!
One of my teachers in high school used to say, “Student A’s right to punch student B in the nose ends where student B’s nose begins.” Just because you have a right to do something doesn’t mean you should choose to exercise that right.
FYI I was a bit late in answering to one of your posts. It was the Basic Instructions cartoon of a couple of days ago. You said it would be safe to assume my wife loves me after 26 years as I am still alive. I replied that I like the way you think. (still do).
Actually, you ARE free to do what you want whenever you want, Calvin. What you want is freedom from the consequences of your actions and that will never be.
The key problem with Texas is exactly what Calvin’s philosophy is here. Almost everyone seems to think they’re entitled to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and wherever they want. Hence the open-carry nonsense. Yeah, I really want to see Texas sociopaths openly (or non-openly) carrying guns around because they think they look tough. If Texas’ motto was “the sociopath state” at least it would be accurate.

I believe you are mistaken. At least in my opinion when Watterson put ‘rights’, the toon it became political.

Calvin, you have the right to remain silent and that isn’t going to happen either!

I didn’t know Sen. Joe McCarthy was a liberal. Or Uncle Joe Stalin. Live and learn. Ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha…
See, in what some of us like to think of as reality, accusing someone of your own actions is known as The Karl Rove Doctrine.

And the life of Calvin solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. (Well, he is short, anyway.)

It is a fact well known to all children that adults always get to do whatever they want. Just ask one.
