Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for July 20, 2015
Transcript:
Pig: What does it mean when people say something is 'Meta'? Pastis: It's when a creative work refers to itself. Pig: What for? Pastis: Let me try to explain it with a metaphor. Do you know how a metaphor works? Pig: No. What's a meta metaphor for. Pastis: Well, say you met a four- Rat: Stop!

Here, Pig, I hope this helps:.meta
A term, especially in art, used to characterize something that is characteristically self-referential.
âSo I just saw this film about these people making a movie, and the movie they were making was about the film industryâŠâ âDude, thatâs so meta. Stop before my brain explodes.â

BTW⊠much as I love this stripâŠ.Pearls Before Swine began in 2002.
Puns have been around since way before Roman timesâŠ.
(or even Times New Roman.)
Groucho made puns on television in the early 1950âs, The comic strip Frank nâ Ernest, which started in 1972, makes horrible ones almost every day.
Not everyone who writes puns is Pastis⊠or imitates Pastis or steals from Pastis.Let us put those accusations Pastis⊠erâŠ. PastusâŠ.
Some of us are just afflicted.Have some sympathy!

Your citation regarding sarcasm and wit is attributed to Oscar Wilde, but has never been verified in any of his writings. The comment I referenced about the pun is from Samuel Johnson, who took Shakespeare to task for his use of the form, saying it had some âmalignant powerâ over the bardâs mind. So, both those notions are out and about in the world,
