And really do mean it, when they ask: “So how was your day?”

I was a great student but a lousy teacher.

And one of two subjects (along with the weather) that everyone can potentially engage in, no matter who you are, or where you came from!

It’s funny- an ocean apart, and they “survived on Skype”. But a continent between two coasts, and “potentially” “the end of the line”. – Yup, it’s not always out of “infidelities” or mismatches that a couple go their separate ways…

What “lessons” did Luann “teach” those kids? Every time we saw her at the day camp, she was just overseeing the kids as they made a mess with paints, glue, and glitter. That’s not “teaching”, that’s just being a nanny. We’ve seen no evidence at all that Luann can be a teacher.

I see a parting of the paths, coming….each has their own passion, and the two won’t mix….

One can be a teacher pretty much anywhere, if that is really what Luann is going to do. But if Quill is serious about Show Biz, his USA choices are limited pretty much to NYC or LA (after possible lower-level stints in various other cities). Be it noted, however, that Australia has a flourishing film industry of its own….

I’d actually like to see Luann do something to show me she is a great teacher instead of just being told that by the various characters. Maybe deal with some serious class bullying, miss some dates with Quill to tutor a slow learner in her class, or anything. She comes off as boasting instead of just enthusiastic. Quill didn’t come back saying ’ I was the star of the show, the fans adored me, I got a lot of job offers.’ But Luann is all ’ I was this, I am that, me, me, me.’ She might’ve said ’I’ve never felt so alive’, or ‘I love the kids so much’, or ‘Watching the kids grow never gets old’, but no…. Maybe she could visit a sick student in the hospital, or go really out of her way to get a book she just knows will be perfect for a troubled girl….anything.

Well, the adage does go: Those who can’t do, teach.

Why would enthusiasm be deplorable??…..thats what makes working with younger people so much more fun.

The best teachers may have been poor students once. They understand their student’s struggles and can help them overcome them.

Another way out might be for Prudence to show up and enroll at Moon Uni as a drama student, because Quill told her what a great program it has (and, of course, so that she could be with him). Luann is far too possessive and jealous to put up with that, so it’s bye bye Q-man, hello Mister Jock.

I lasted 3 years as a teacher before throwing in the towel. How can a poor student become a great teacher? It happens way more than you think. Excellent students (like me) have no internal concept of struggling to learn something. Poorer students have to work for everything so when their students are struggling, they know multiple strategies that might work for that student. Me, I was like, this is easy to teach, and couldn’t be more wrong.

“There’s only one good way to wrap this up so we all win.”^1st of all, no one would (or should ) feel right after going to read that comic, on that day. Furthermore, there is no “good way” to tackle such a plot. – 2ndly, Mr. Evans had already in the past ruled out such plots, when he explained how he almost depicted that in a storyline, previously. He stated that when a classmate of Karen Evans died in an accident in a vehicle crash, he considered dealing with it in the comic, with Aaron Hill undergoing that very same thing. However, with much second thought, it was deemed too much to have readers go through. He ended up just having him move to Hawaii, instead. – Sure, there are real life consequences, and illness and death have been dealt with in comics before (even in Luann). But such things are dealt with in a proper manner, and the whole story is dealt with in dignity, and with the characters (and ultimately the readers) to give proper respect to one who is depicted as being deceased in a comic (even if by their very nature, they are “just a comic”), with a fitting emotional resolution and “human interest” sort of feel.

Those who say those who can do and those who can’t teach, do not in anyway understand the art of teaching.

Teachers in this country are underpaid, under-appreciated and given less respect than football players. Teachers influence every young life they touch. Good teachers are priceless. (There are bad teachers, just as there are bad cops, bad politicians and bad professional sports players.) Teachers use their own funds to make sure their students have what is needed to learn as both the government and those who vote down school budgets think teachers only work during classroom hours and have summers off. Those same folks do not bother to find out that many teachers are up late into the night making sure every student has what s/he needs to learn. Those same people don’t know that teachers either take on their own, or are required to take, courses during the summer.

Yes, I am a (retired) teacher who still substitutes and is often asked to come back to teaching full-time. I taught in an inner-city situation and had to teach my students in spite of the crack house across the street. I had to teach the student who had a knife to her throat on the way to school because her older brother hadn’t paid for his drugs. I had to teach the student with leukemia who had a blanket and pillow in the classroom for when he could no longer sit (and when he could not come to school, I dropped off his homework and picked it up so he didn’t fall behind).

I also taught in private school where there was no discipline because mommy and daddy would threaten to stop contributions since their child was perfect.

Was I, myself, a great student? No, I was the average student. Not everyone is in the box – nor should they be. This is why we have a flawed educational system. Every child should be able to hone their strengths and it is the good teacher that helps each child to do so.

I am an excellent teacher – because I can. I always could and I followed my heart (leaving the world of business behind after a successful though unfulfilling start in the field of marketing). It wasn’t always easy (government and administration made sure of that), but it was always satisfying. Almost thirty years later, many of my students keep in touch with me.

Those that think teachers can’t, have an insecurity that even I can’t help them through.

Overseeing a bunch of kids engaged in arts and crafts at a day camp is not the same thing as “teaching”. What it shows is that she gets along well with kids, nothing more. Luann in fact has no idea whether she would be a good teacher or not.

I used to live with an English teacher who was frequently at a loss for descriptive nouns.

Because the educational system is geared toward the convenience of the institution, not the students’ learning capabilities. To be fair, it would be hard to organize a classroom setting any other way. but that’s the primary problem. Of course, the emphasis on self-esteem rather than pride in actual individual accomplishments doesn’t help…

Because of the reasons, Luann. Because of the reasons.

Most of the great leaders were poor soldiers.

Ever notice: teachers and lawyers always like to broadcast what they are to everyone. It’s like a magic word that’s supposed to impress.

Luann peaked in second grade. She is WAY ahead of the kindergarteners!

I usually like to comment after I read the comments from the night before. This particular strip gives me a good basis for my reasoning for commenting this way. IMO I think a lot of comments miss the point; here you have the two characters excitedly sharing things they love to do. It is not at all surprising that Luann, the warm, loving person that she is, likes to teach young children, and that Quill, who traveled from Australia partly to go to theater school would be excited about working in the industry in NYC, the heart of the theater in this country (although we do pretty well here in Chicago in that area as well). Underlying all of that is how it will affect their relationship, will he want to relocate to live in NYC, and will she want to stay or relocate to become a early childhood teacher? What does that mean? A lot of teachers were not the best students, and a lot of teacher were excellent students. The important thing is what kind of teacher are they? What do they mean to the education of the students they teach? Apparently our girl means a lot to the youngsters she teaches, gives her purpose. Just like counseling gives Bernice purpose. Someone mentioned Gunther (please get over Luann and Gunther as anything other than good friends) and Tiffany. One of their issues is finding their purpose. I think Quill and Luann are far closer to finding theirs.

As Ox might say, true words dat!

Unfortunately, with the relative ease of digital coloring comes the demand for high throughput and consequently the ease of making mistakes.

Up until a few years ago much of the coloring was outsourced to the now defunct American Color — they built their rep on coloring Sunday spreads the old fashioned way (John Houseman got his start there) and they had people dedicated to checking. Few things got by them.

But as anybody in an editorial role can attest, checking your own work is not without risks. We have our blind spots and it takes fresh eyes to notice the goofs. Many of the colorists work solo from home and upload the finished work to GoComics. Their own people are working to tight deadlines themselves, so only the most obvious gaffes will be flagged and fixed — time permitting.

I was alerted, but because I did not have access to the source files at the time, I e-mailed GoComics and they quickly patched the strip. The only durable error is with those papers that print the dailies in color.

Some “errors” (such as the illustrated case of Luann’s car changing colors) is becasue there are only so many spec’d components in the core coloring guidelines. It’s impossible to search out every reoccurence of something, especially when separated by many months or even years.

Stay tuned, I’m sure another error will pop up. Hopefully not too soon.

Maybe Luann is more of the housewife with a large family type. Than she would be as a woman with a outside job and very little interaction with her kids type.

I think this talk of Quill leaving the strip may be premature/wishful thinking. Don’t get me wrong. I want to see him gone as much as anyone. (He’s boring!) But frankly, I think Karen has a crush. I hope I’m wrong.

And a Public Service Announcement for our young friends:*Do as Lu did. After a semester or two of college, GET A PAYING JOB. *A job helps you appreciate your money. A job keeps you in touch with the real world and real people. A job outside your chosen field expands your worldview. A job within your chosen field tests whether you really want to do this for the rest of your life.*The world of work is huge. In college, dabble in farflung fields. Working in college gives you the same opportunity.

Hey Luann, I’m the same way. I’m such a good teacher that my boss threatens to super-glue me to the floor if I try to leave. I’m such a bad student, its all I can do to maintain my license.

Sadly, this relationship is likely doomed.

Why such predictable stuff? How about:

1. Toni tells Brad she’s decided to follow Mother Teresa.

2. Frank discovers that the warehouse is actually a front for organized crime, and has to go on the run from both the mob and the cops because they both think he has the hidden drug stash.(But they’re wrong; it’s actually TJ).

4. Gunther admits to Tiffany that he’s been having recalled memories of his father, and he thinks the guy was from another planet.

5. Bernice goes to the campus Health Center because she’s had some odd symptoms, and the doctor calls her up to ask if she would be willing to be a guinea pig, because she has the only immunity organisms in the world against Kardashian disease….

Most teachers actually were pretty poor students. That’s why education majors tend to have among the lowest SAT scores of any college major.

You never Truly Learn a Subject until you try to Teach it to someone Else..
