âThe Lockhornsâ does demonic-possession gags? Wow, thatâs kind of hard-core for them. I guess since Bill Hoest died, Bunnyâs trying to make the strip edgyâŠ
J-AâJâD: âSo, that ought be Regan MacNeil from âThe Exorcistâ in that chair.â
No, it oughtnât. The cartoon is more understandable this way, because few would recognize the name âRegan MacNeilâ, but most will recognize âLinda Blairâ and make the association with her most famous (iconic) role.
Similarly, if a cartoonist were making a joke involving a woman being grasped in the hand of a 50-foot gorilla, it would be more sensible to drop the name âFay Wrayâ than âAnn Darrowâ, even though âAnn Darrowâ was the name used in both the 1933 original of âKing Kongâ and the 2005 remake.
Blurring the distinction between actors and the roles they play is a standard comedy device, such as imagining that Mark Hamill carries an actual lightsaber, or that Bill Bixby turns into a giant green monster when heâs angry, or that Ian McKellen has powers of wizardry.
I wish commentors would actually comment on the joke instead of trying to knit pick about some innocuous point that strives to move the attention to their comments.
I think this joke is funny. Iâve seen the movie and I know the name Linda Blair. If I googled the name of the character in the movie, Iâd know/recall the actual name of the character. But why would I or most people want to have to Google a characterâs name to get the point?
This isnât Glenn McCoyâs first day on the job. I think he knows what works best. I think it would be awesome to have a cartoonist like this allow certain commentors to fill in for a week to see how they would do.
Exactly, Joe. Most everybody would associate the name âLinda Blairâ with the movie; far fewer would recognize the name âRegan MacNeil.â The gag works better the way McCoy wrote it.

When did âThe Exorcistâ come out? This joke is old and lame! And removed from my page. If I wanted this bleeep, Iâd read âThe Lockhornsâ.
