The art styles just don’t match, couldn’t Joe had “tweek” Dendrobia a little bit to fit better? This is like watching Dick Tracy interact with the characters in the animated series.Chet’s Tracy and The UPA animated characters didn’t mesh well either!
Annnd… Detective Four makes her appearance: crossover Detective Dethany, full of self-referential humor, as befits her origin. Tracy even joins in the joke! Now that we have our cast, what do we do with it?
I had to go over to Comics Kingdom to check and make sure – “Safe Havens” is another strip by Bill Holbrook, which explains the reference in panel 3. The apostrophe is not supposed to be there; it isn’t something belonging to Safe Haven, it is a day care center called Safe Havens.
Perhaps the bartender is Shadwell Rafferty, from the books by Larry Millett? (St. Paul saloonkeeper inspired by Sherlock Holmes to become an amateur detective.)
Yesterday we were speculating who the unknown detective in panel 3 was – many thought T.V.’s version of Paul Drake. Over at Comics Kingdom, someone thought it might be comic strip detective Kerry Drake!
Oh this was a delight! Dethany, and I are like sisters. We’re both oddballs in offices of tradition. We’re both stubborn individualists, and we both love Dick Tracy :).
Wonderful strip, team tracy!
For ones who’d like to keep up with all of Mr. Hollbrooks’ strips (All are excellent.) Here is the current list.
I’m pretty sure that “On the Fastrack” and “Safe Havens” are in newspapers, because a point is made of “Kevin and Kell” being (most of the time) web-only. Yeah, Bill Holbrook does three daily strips. He also has a spinoff of “Kevin and Kell” told in snippets on Twitter, about a secret interdimensional war between hidden groups on human Earth and animal Earth, and there are characters from all three of his strips with Facebook pages and blogs, not to mention making records and at least one video game. Basically, Holbrook is a one-man syndicate.
Fastrack appears daily and Sundays in the Washington Post. What a great suprise as I read the paper this morning! If you look closely, the last panel in the Fastrack strip offers apologies to Gould, Capp, Mike & Joe.
I remember On The Fastrack from 20 years ago when I had acces to The Washington Post in the college library, if with a 2 or 3 days of delay; but don´t remember this girl Dethany Dendrobia. I thought Wendy was the main carachter. When did she appear and took over the strip?
“Sydney, unless the laws have been changed recently, bank robbery is still a federal crime here in the US, and is outside of Tracy’s jurisdiction.Fritz Ann and her crew of FBI agents are probably the lead investigators, so we may see them working with the MCU looking for X-Ray Specs "-—————————————————————
Good Golly, Miss Molly ! . . .
I guess … that ‘explains’ it all ?
Tracy, Sam and Chief Patton have to “Stand Down” !“Hands tied !” Not their JURISDICTION !Only the Feds can ‘investigate’Maybe it’s my lack of familiarity with US laws ?Thanks !
But, it did seem somewhat cavalier, indeed ‘odd’ that Chet Gould seemed so often to ‘ignore’ that ‘nicety’ … and hadTracy pursuing and arresting Bank Robbers in his City.
Some coming easily to ‘mind’ are . . .
1 Boris Arson – 19342 The Purple Cross Gang – 1936/37 - (Fling, Gurney, Baldy Stack, Maylie, Dade Callahan – jailed)3 Lispy – 1976with her ‘All Girls Gang’ (Lispy died, the gang jailed)
There is ‘some’ early ‘mention’ of the Secret Service in the Arson case, yet all the ‘activity’ seen - was Tracy, Patton and uniformed copsIn the other 2 cases the Feds were never even mentioned.

I went to the official site and checked the “About” link, but it didn’t say whether it was print or on-line only.

I think it’s refreshing to see someone thrown in like this just for fun from time to time. And I’ll bet it’s fun for Team Tracy too.
