I know her.

If Breathed wants to offend a major portion of the country this is a good way to do it. If I wanted to engage in stereotypical thinking I would say he’s a typical self-important arrogant obnoxious Californian, but I would never do that. I lived in California for several years and I’ve always said that there is nothing wrong with California that 35 million less Californians couldn’t cure.

Even though I’m probably on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Breathed, I enjoy his work and find it thoughtful and intelligent.

Today’s offering is simply offensive with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Visually wrong on so many levels

I’m not the only cartoonist who doesn’t understand this cartoon. Anybody got a translation for us?

Kind of hit this Midwesterner on the wrong day. My response to this childish longing to stereotype wasn’t the goal I have for taking time for comics. My list of comics is too long, anyway. Grow up, or don’t, on someone else’s time.

Ms. “Mary Kay Kommando-wannabe” (my description) Char Treuse of M.I.I.L.F., perturbed by Mr. Breathed’s depiction of “hayseed voters” (his words) and corn-in-the-ears-wearing farmers, is not done with Berkeley.

A crueler fate awaits, for that “Hammer of God” is not her only weapon, so wait for it….

Berkeley spent many years in Iowa City. Just go to a Walmart in any rural Midwestern town and you’ll see he is right on the money.

I’ve read Berke’s strips for 35 years and I’ve always enjoyed them …. until now.

What the hell is wrong with him? Is his perspective so constrained that it’s, “My perspective is the correct one, if you don’t agree, you’re a land-locked idiot!” ? Just gotta ask … btw, I live in California, the land of liberality, but jeeez … Berke, be a little accepting of the rest of the country!

I just dropped him from GoComics. I don’t like to be preached to and insulted just because I may not agree with him.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been following the whole story line, but I don’t see why everyone is so offended by this particular comic.

Jeebus H. Crow, have you all who lambaste BB for his fine artwork not bothered to be fans, come to not recognize a pre-existing character? I am sure she has been here before. Also, too, some of the cartoons might be adult-ish, so be careful. Some of us don’t care for “Hi and Lois,” or even “Prince Valiant.”

Wow, major upsets over a cartoon again. If you dont like it, dont visit it. If you wat steotypical thinking, look at Hollywood… which is in California.

There’s a lot of “fly over America” that ain’t in Iowa – and we’re just plain pissed!!!

I think I made my point. Stereotypes are the product of lazy thinking, they can be hurtful and can incite angry reactions. I met a lot of shallow Californians, but I also met a lot of wonderful people. There’s a lot I miss about California and a lot I don’t miss. My major dislike is that it is too overcrowded especially in the coastal urban areas. I would return for the right opportunity if it was in the Sierra Nevadas, in Northern California or a rural part of the Bay Area. As far as the big cities, I wouldn’t want to live in any of the big ones on the East Coast either.

This is an amazing piece, initially confusing of course. Many many layers of meaning. I took time to read the comments and some really just don’t do visual language well. Art is the lie that tells the truth(on occasion) and if this one offends you, its probably because it hits too close to home.
