I remember when getting up to sharpen a pencil was a welcome break in the monotony. I have been known to break the point on purpose, just to have an excuse to walk across the room and back.
The people that discovered the first major deposit of graphite thought it was lead. As it spread around and people used it, they all called it lead, even in different languages. It preservers today because people are stupid. They never contained lead.
This reminds me of the space race during the cold war. The United States spent millions of dollars developing a pen that would work in zero G. The Russians used pencils.

Linus would likely be “that guy” on the internet.

Guess I have to say that when an ex-schoolmate accidentally cut her hand with a pencil, she developed Bavarian clay and Madagascar graphite poisoning.

How did Linus take joy out of the pencil sharpening?
Kaputnik almost 9 years ago
We call it lead because, even though almost everybody knows it isn’t, it doesn’t really matter if we give it that name.

There was this good-looking girl in class that wore tight skirts and all the boys watched when she sharpened her pencil. Good times.

Charlie Brown would likely get his sleeve caught in the pencil sharpener, so there probably wasn’t a lot of joy in it for him anyway. . .

Oh, come on Charlie Brown! It’s even more fun to sharpen graphite! ;)

Hey Charlie Brown; get the clay and graphite out of your butt and go sharpen the pencil already!

I always hated those pencils which broke easily and you had to keep sharpening them every 2 minutes.

Those know-it-all types are despised by many people. Better to curb it a bit, Linus.
