Would one go to Lowe’s and/or The Home Depot websites to get brick and mortar?

We can talk about brick and mortar versus online retail, but as I teach that lets focus on Shannon. In the existing arc in the Fuse, Jonah asked that his sister watch Shannon as he had to go to a casting for a theater production he was trying to get. Could this panel be partly a continuation of the idea that Shannon is being taken c/o by Luann after she might have left the Fuse, and maybe Toni had herself asked Luann to watch her? It’s in Luannverse, and I think it’s likely that it has no proximate connection with the prior arc, but it’s funny that Shannon in in a Sunday panel after being one of the main subjects in the weekly panels. I think there is a connection, if not direct or proximate though.

I miss Borders. The book selection was amazing and they had an astounding collection of international music.

There was a time when people did buy brick and mortar online in a way, just not computer online. Sears housing kits included all the supplies to build homes. Some people made their own while others hired contractors. Most of such homes are rather near train lines and there were quite a few models, with a great many of the homes not only built but still standing because they actually used quality components. In fact, perhaps the majority of people who have those homes, which are now about 80 to 100 years old, IF memory serves, do not even realize they are in kit homes. We recently ran into an article on those. It answered for me why a popular roof shape of old homes near where i grew up – which was a harbor so those who built ships often also built homes w similar approaches only turned downside up for the roof – can be found inland, and i realized that a greataunt had a Sears kit home. Some of you might, too, and not even know it – yet.The stores i miss were private ones run by individuals who were very clueful buyers. There was a man a generation older than i with an incredible bookstore. A person using his store diligently could acquire the equivalent of a bachelors in two subjects in which he had advanced degrees, and learn a great deal about a range of other topics, too. Only once did i ever catch him in an accidental error when he confused Mary Wollstonecroft (Hope i spelled that right from memory.) with her daughter. That book was outside his main areas of expertise, though.By taking a bus across the Island i could reach a large town where the record shop owner was the sort of person who right from the start stocked the first albums of groups like the Velvet Underground, and the Incredible String Band. He kept standards, too, as bread and butter products, but he had interesting new sounds for anyone who wanted to explore. In a way, after the monopolization of so much of radio, online music saved the ability to explore, and allowed those in types of music that were shut out to remain better afloat, people in experimental music, classical music, folk music, etc., esp those new to those types of music. Without the preceding monopolization of so much of radio the situation woukd have been much different than it actually was.

Thanks for giving the term “rimshot” so early in the comments, Brd. I could not recall it for the life of me, and that bugged me.

Very close, Sukie. “Wollstonecr*a*ft”, I believe. And yes, Mama Mary was a fascinating character, one of the less well-known pioneers of the Women’s Rights movement, in my opinion.

I miss bookstores quite a bit, myself. I would miss music stores more, except that I spend several hours of my life (like last night) staffing the “merch table” for musicians coming through town to do a concert. I don’t get to browse as widely as I could in a music store, nor do I get to hear the recommendations of the staff, but I meet a lot more musicians more often than a lot of people.

I also miss camera shops. I did read somewhere that Barnes and Noble’s profits were up in the actual “book” category, not ebooks but the real thing. And what about the book case makers….will they become just a memory?

No, book stores will never disappear and so there will always be a need for shelves to put the books on.

Classic rimshot complete with drumroll… and yet, it misses. I suspect that’s what the look on Puddles’s face is all about. He’s thinking “Bricks and mortar? Online? Nahhh…!”

I tried the Brita pitcher once, when I lived in an area with a contaminated water problem ( algae). Actually, it didn’t do enough to remove the bad smell. Tho bottled water may not be an optimal solution eco-wise, sometimes it is the most practical one.

Amoeba Record shop in LA is iconic. Old and new vinyl. always busy. Look it up online There are quite a few used music video stores around me- Second Spin for one.

Bookstores around me are always full of people. But Borders was always full of people, too. I didn’t understand how it could go out of business. I think price has something to do with it. I used to buy a lot of books when they were $5, $10, $15, but who can afford $20 for a hardbound romance, much less $40 for a cookbook or $60 for something meatier.

What if the indoor malls put on music concerts? I might not go or stay long on Hip-Hop night, but I would certainly go to shop and stay with a pretzel and listen to most other music. I would take my granddaughter, too. She would love looking down from the second level. with a scoop of ice cream.

-Thanks for that suggestion, but I had already looked into it. Jury is still out on how much lead and other heavy metals from old pipes can actually be removed by that kind of filter. A better one is a filtration system applied at the intake source, but I live in a condo and they really don’t want to let one of us dig up all the pipes…
