• Teachers always compare annual salaries only work 9 months per year. (Some, by far not all, work summers – but get paid extra)• Teacher’s benefits are far more than private industry’s. E.g., a teacher I dated 20 years ago got $150 sunglasses – for her and all her kids – with no copay!• Right up there with all the politicians, their retirement package is very generous – about 3-4 TIMES typical non-government packages.Yet none of that is ever mentioned. Just our pay is too low. And repeated so often it becomes canon.
And yet, none of those teacher earn with the college football coach makes, which is more than the president of the college, the head of any hospital, the governor, a Supreme Court Justice, or even the President of the United States. FOR A STUPID, DANGEROUS GAME, for the love of Mike!
Since the Feds have decided to tell teachers what and how to teach, and the judges have decided who to be in each classroom our schools have become just another bureaucratic arm of the government. I agree with all the complaints I hear about our schools but I see the fault being placed on the wrong group. My Wife taught for 40 years, my mother for over 40 and my daughter is now in her 16th year. I would have loved to teach but there is no way I could put up with the BS, useless paperwork and other stuff I would four letter words to describe.
The one thing not being discussed is quality of the students teachers have to deal with since the late 60’s. With the breakup of the families since then and both parents working, most children are not receiving the supervision and discipline in the home that they previously did. Add to that, the fact that teachers cannot discipline the child in the class room and parents usually do not back up the teacher when they are called in for problems with their child, and you have chaos in the classroom.
The BLS reports the median annual salary for high school teachers was $56,310 in 2014. The best-paid 10 percent in the field made approximately $88,910, while the bottom 10 percent made $37,540. Compensation is typically based on your years of experience and educational level.
You can’t blame the teachers for all of that. Our upscale community has somewhat overcrowded classes(because they have allowed students from outside the district). Guess which students are lowering the standards? We support sports and music from foundations within the community and the kids from our town score very high. The other schools around that also do is the town with 5 colleges and the city that has the most Asian immigrants.
Smart parents that support their children and education in general is what it takes. When you have urban poor(with Ca’s tax structure) and the single parent working, latchkey kids and a gang life mentality, what do you expect?
Sure there are exceptions, but in general smart, productive parents beget smart, well rounded students.
In my experience, the best way to do well on the test was to know the subject. What’s truly sad is that so many of the teachers we hire never learned that, because they are dolts who never mastered any subject.

I guess I have a hard time sympathizing:

The state must be using common core to calculate teacher’s salaries.

It is all about Common Core of Stupidity, I actually think Mrs. Trumbo may be teaching outside of core with that math question.
