Buuut isn´t that the thing … cats might not eat it all at once, but go back to eat it later on. So if it tries to cover the food it would more be so others doesn´t try to eat it.
I love Puck’s little fangs in the last panel! Of course he is trying to save his food for later, but it may not work as Lupin has already broadcast it.
There are some big cats that bury their kill to keep it for additional feeding and hide it from other animals. Just another reminder that they are only a smaller version of those big beauties.
My cat seems to only do that when he’s just been in the litter box. I think there are lingering odors that follow him to the bowl, and, he gets stuck in “cover-up” mode.
This discussion puts me in mind of the standard explanation of why dogs often turn around and around before lying down. ALSO: This also reminds me of George Carlin’s dictum that certain words are innately funnier than others that refer to the same object, such as “bucket” being funnier than “pail.” The word ’linoleum" is perfect in this context.
Mine occasionally do this but I think it’s more to bury wet food they don’t like (one week they love the flavour the next they don’t) than saving for later. Mind if Sammy really likes the taste he will scarf down the entire bowl even if he’s full. He’s now on restricted portions as I got tired of cleaning up regurgitated meals
have you seen this video of a badger burying an entire calf carcass?http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/04/04/522598144/video-badger-burying-a-cow-surprises-scientistsIt took him five days!

We had one that did that. We always thought it was her way of saying “This food tastes like @#*%!”

There was once a fellow camping in the Rockies. He woke up one morning to find that a much larger cat than Puck had “saved him for later.”

Alias used to do that. And she was very determine about it. She’d scratch from every side of the bowl.
