Wow, Monday was Gunther and Luann in a seemingly “Square Pegs revival” moment…

Tues. through Friday was "Buff Rogers in the Art 101, minus 24th and 1/2, Class-ury…AKA ‘The misadventures of Tony Stark as Irony Man’ ".

And today could be a ‘reboot’ of sorts, a combination of ’Kate and Allie meets Mary and Rhoda…where they all go out to lunch with Mama, somewhere in Raytown- and Laverne and Shirley pick up the check…then suddenly put it down….".

Welcome to Adulthood, Bernice. Not all of us get what we want.

It’s a fact of life that anywhere that Gunther is, is an “awkward place”, simply by virtue of his being there. There’s no need for you to be there too, Bernice. As for Piro, since you acknowledge that he’s not interested in you, why are you still wearing his scarf? Regrets at what never happened, or do you just share his taste in neck warmers? And the “C” in psych shows that you really don’t understand people nearly so well as you think, as pretty much everything you’ve done in the last 2 years has already demonstrated.

Did Bernice just say “Gunther and I are in an awkward place?” Why would she think she and Gunther are in any sort of place together?

That C in psychology depresses Bernice because she thought she was such hot stuff at it. Maybe this will wake her up. Except I’m not sure if cartoon characters wake up to their own flaws. Well, maybe Tiffany. Hopefully a humbled Bernice will become a kinder Bernice—I means he’s usually spot on target with her snarkery, but she needs to learn the right way to be right.

Somehow, I thought being a ‘powerhouse’ had more to do with achieving a successful career. Not in collecting dates…

That felt like a lot of plot movement for three panels.

Regarding Luann’s dress, wouldn’t her instructor have knocked points off her grade because she didn’t actually make the dress? Gunther did all the sewing. Most college level art classes require the student to do all of their own work.

And after more than a year she still doesn’t know the “jock guy’s” name?

But Luann, have you actually gone out with anyone?

Wow. From my experience as a college professor and mother kf adult childre, I think Bernice is a well-adjusted young woman with a wide range of talents. I’m not sure what the rest of you expect from a college sophomore.

Good points by PMark & Dreamdeer. Quill still has Luann’s heart, but she is liking the attention she is getting from other fellows. Even though it may be a different scarf, Bernice still wears one thinking of Piro.

As for the “C” on Bernice’s paper (wonder if it contained a snarky tone?) – and it’s up to G&K, of course – she should consider pursuing something else. Law enforcement, maybe, since she likes to have people follow rules?

Thus demonstrating, once again, America’s cultural bias in favor of the “pretty girl.” Good job buying into it, Greg.

Meh.

Bernie’s foray into the love-struck world of smittenhood (re Piro) has crashed. She hasn’t developed the personality traits to bounce back as LuAnn seems ever to have. She’s almost the anti-LuAnn. If that’s her function in the pantheon of characters in Greg’s mind either she’s relegated to that for the foreseeable future. In the words of OLD Blue Eyes, “That’s Life.”

Maybe it’s because Bernice looks like John Lennon!

One of the remarkable things about this strip is that most of the “minor” characters (not Luann) are more interesting than Luann. I would much rather see a spin off featuring Toni and Brad than see tiresome panels of teenage girl angst. But, that’s just me, I suppose.

Remember. She found out the Gunther is the only one that showed up at her movie showing. She not realizes Gunth has a thing for her. The awkwardness comes in that those pursuing her are not being pursued. She doesn’t have the character skills to handle all this. Then there’s her BFF constantly living la vie bon.

Bernice is in danger of turning into an “old biddy” from a young one if she doesn’t have a radical breakthrough soon!

As you sit glumly in this coffeehouse, despairing that you’re not a powerhouse, just remember this when things look dark: No need for a powerhouse, just a little spark.

Bernice is going to turn from a “young biddy” into an “old biddy” if she isn’t careful !

Hope offers little, and false hope is too easy to fall into. Go with the reality and fight, not hope is the best way. Too many rely on hope.

Hey Bernice, gets to you, sometimes, doesn’t it. It seems that no matter how hard you try or how hard to want to succeed or how good you are, it never seem to happen. Then, to top it off, you have to watch all the other people, who do nothing to deserve all their good luck, get everything handed to them. It is so frustrating. Bernice is the dose of reality in this comic. Welcome to real life.

You know given the nit-pickiness and negative domain of so many commentators in this blog it’s hard to know which is worse in their collective minds: being ditzy Luann, or being the total useless human beingness of the sleaze TJ, who happens to be Brad’s loyal best friend, or the pseudo-intellectual Bernice who happens to be Luann’s loyal best friend. You know (there I go again with “you know”) we pick our own best friends, and they pick us, this is our’s and their choice, not anyone else’s. We love them for whatever reason, whatever the foibles that make them seem totally losers to the people not involved with the choice of a best friend. I defend TJ because he has developed from being an opportunist only, and if he was he is BRAD’S friend anyway; he is a much better person, and even Nancy and Frank have accepted him with one eye open. Nancy has accepted Toni, with one eye open as was demonstrated when she said that she will not allow her son’s heart to be broken again. So TJ is easy. As for Bernice, give the young woman a break. Yeah she is snarky, yes she is overly certain that she knows people, only she does not, and is starting to realize she does not, she is likely to get a C on a psych exam. probably because that snarky, know-it-all-attitude gets in the way of what the professor is trying to get her learn and consider, but as far as Luann is concerned, that is HER best friend. I try to look at them as that so I am not in that negative domain. One more thing: is this panel the start of a new arc, or just a respite from the wedding preparations? I think it is a new arc, and I think it will involve Gunther, possibly Tiffany, Piro, man I hope Rosa (one can hope) and who knows what else will happen. Time will tell but I think Gunther and Bernice are due to get to a new level.

I am inclined to be dismissive of whiny losers such as Bernice is working hard to be.

But then I muse that for creator Greg she is the necessary other side of the Luann coin. Today, Lulu is manic and Bernice is depressive. On the other days, it could just as well be the other way around. But herein lies something to agonize over for protagonist and deuteragonist….

And Bernice wants to be a counselor. That should put a lot of kids in deep depression. Throw in sarcastic, and really mess up the student body.

What a switch— in high school Bern was the achiever and Lu “middled”. But if we look again, we see that all of Lu’s achievements deal with guys. Bern’s trying to achieve on her own merits. You go, Bern!

Bernice is a realist, good at self-loathing and over interpreting. But the darkest hour is just before dawn. Last Spring when Bernice was berating herself after ice cream with Gunther and the silent movie where the only people who showed up were Hair and Gunther (the latter hoping to make a move on her), she went back into the common room (where the film was shown) and there was Piro wondering where she had been. Maybe something good like that will happen now.

I think Bernice should major in Library Science.

Bernice wants the personal touch. She doesn’t want to be away from people. She isn’t that kind of a person. Though I think she would excel in Library Science. But that is beside the point.

I found ~Erendirani~‘s attack on Siesmic much more offensive than his comment. He and others have as much right to post their thoughts as you and all the others who attack them. He likes the strip or he wouldn’t bother to read and post. …………………..Please stop the attacks. Take your own advice. If you don’t like what he has to say, just ignore it. You don’t have to read it.

Lots, I think most, college kids change their majors in their Freshman or Sophomore years. …………………….. What do y’all think Bernice should change to?……………So far we have Vet, Lawyer, Librarian. I think she could be a clinical statistician- spinning results of tests and surveys. Or a Social Worker- she wouldn’t put up with much once she learned a little more about the world.
