One of the all-time classic strips. And the source of SO MUCH bootlegged material! Watterson could have become a wealthy, wealthy man if he’d been the greedy sort.
It’s a little more bittersweet for me, because my mom actually took initial steps to try to make my sister a ward of the state. All because my sister wanted to have a social life and be a normal teenager. Myself, I survived by keeping my head down and having no friends.
There’s an album named “Beethoven Wrote It, But It Swings!” It actually was originally a 78 rpm record of well-known classical music rearranged and recorded by some of the biggest names in swing music, like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Raymond Scott. Some pretty good tracks on it.
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer was classical-influenced rock. Their album “Pictures at an Exhibition” is a classical piece reworked into dazzling rock. But I think my favorite classical-to-rock piece is Love Sculpture’s “Sabre Dance”. Here is the long version (Turn it up! ☺):

While Calvin is at the orphanage, he won’t have his parents, so he can freely have his dance party with Hobbes!

This will always be one of my all-time favourite Calvin & Hobbes strips. In fact, one of my all-time favourites of ANY comic.

C&H is always good, my favorites are when dad explains things to Calvin.

Our victrola needed to be fully wound up to play at 78 rpm. Otherwise the music would just slow waaaay down and finally stop.

Certainly one of Watterson’s best; it shoots me back to the 80’s instantly, with visions of “Risky Business” running through my brain . . .

Wait’ll Mom has a say in this; after all, marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right, and the other is a husband…

Some classical music at 78 RPM: https://clyp.it/d0mr31z1#
Don’t forget the shades.
You can do this yourself. Grab a classical song, drop it into Audacity, click Effects > Change Speed, and set it to 33 1/2 to 78.
