In spite of all the apocalyptic movies and doomsday preppers, the truth is whenever civilizations anywhere on Earth anytime in history have faced famines, plagues, or other catastrophes neighbors have always helped neighbors.

Lynn’s Notes:This was an opportunity to make an important observation, I hoped, without sounding preachy. There are serious things a cartoonist wants to say; the challenge is in choosing the right time and the right way to say them.
As this strip is in a “new run” phase, i.e. a retcon of the old strip in present day, the temptation for story spoilers can be oppressive. I will simply say there was a strip where there was a fire. Adult Michael behaved in a way that was the exact opposite of what child Michael is saying in the fourth panel.
