With Carrion presumably in the Hotel Greybar, “all bidders” means Diet Smith and Daddy Warbucks, two friends of Tracy, and the Dragon Lady, one of the most devious villainesses in the history of comics. So, I’m guessing “none of the above” has offed the Old One-Eyed Dame. This story is really drawing my interest!
@NIGHT GAUNT 49 from YESTERDAY: There was one other Columbo episode that departed significantly from the established formula. It may have been during the run of episodes in later years, when the show was brought back for a while. The story was based on an 87th Precinct novel called “Til Death” – Columbo’s nephew was getting married, and the bride was kidnapped. (In the book, it was Detective Steve Carella’s nephew, if I remember correctly. Or maybe the bride was Carella’s younger sister, and she was marrying another cop. I don’t remember for sure.) Anyway, the opening credits in the TV movie attributed the plot idea to Ed McBain’s books. As an episode of Columbo, it was interesting, but it didn’t quite “work” for me, perhaps because i had read the book. Did you ever see that episode?
SPOILER ALERT Coming this week: Tracy sends desperate calls to Batman, Nancy Drew, The Phantom, Charlie Chan and Little Orphan Annie to come help him solve this deadly case!
here’s something to ponder that I discovered whilst researching Denny’s gunshot wound… on 2/28 Flammel tells her manservant that she wants to leave the next day, not wanting to spend another night in this city (which, ironically, she never DID due to her overnight death) but when she was telling him this, she was reading a two page letter/note… 1) WHAT was in the letter and 2) WHERE is it?!?!

Some things that came out today:
1. All bidders are detained for questioning.
2. The Spirit is not under detention so he is not a bidder.
3. The fifth bidder is still a mystery. At least, he/she was not formally introduced.
4. The mask and gloves are now integral part of The Spirit’s skin.
5. Perenelle is pronounced dead fish dead by Tracy but is she really dead?
6. It’s open season for back seat investigators here at GoComics. 8D

Anyone know when Gould introduced those odd, rounded, pole-mounted video monitors?
I have “You Only Live Twice” playing in the background, and there are some very similar ones in Tanaka’s office.

Oh my Mysta, we’re together at last
The fun we’ll have will be exciting and fast
I’ll hold and squeeze you till the break of light
We’ll playfully frolick and pretend to fight
No more loneliness you’ll fill me with love
I’ll be the muscle while you zap from above
What’s that you say things aren’t as they seem
Dang it’s Tracy this has all been a dream

129 comments yesterday, a record for recent times. There were several really good late additions, too.

Yes, it’s a thing in the Spirit continuity that he wears his mask and gloves at all times (as he’s legally dead), but never socks.

A great trio of panels today. Great story telling. We picture Spirit dragging the phone from the bedside table prior to the first panel.

Before I finally recognized what I was look at, I though the Spirit was on CPAP.

I guess Flammel’s ‘caveat’ was this story’s ’chekov’s gun’ huh?

We can pretty much eliminate Oliver Warbucks and Diet Smith as suspects.
Probably “The Dragon Lady” as well.
Who does that leave …?
