A doppelganger large and strong does put the squeeze on Spirit

Whose wounded wing makes the pain sing. Spirit shall not hear it.

He’ll rise above the violent shove to give back what he gets

This latest tussle makes him hustle, recovers as he hits.

While out upon the balcony Ramon must make a stand

Decidedly an underdog. Strike up a mournful band.

A life of service wore him down, stern mistress too demanding

Made a deal his fate did seal, now in the storm he’s standing

In the rain with psychic pain, drawing down on the detective

He and the double had a plan, retrospectively defective.

Who shall live and who may die ‘tween the shooters and the brawlers?

Who shall be standing in the end over beaten, bleeding crawlers?

“One cage”? Who’s been making life miserable for Ramon? Am Not?

I wonder why the though balloon in the first panel with Ramon. He may as well have said that out loud.

See, this is why Am never had doubles in Annie. When you’re looking to hire a guy 8 feet tall, you can’t to be too picky about their job history.

(I wonder if all 11 victims were since he joined up with Am. Maybe they were people trying to leave without paying their bill. Or just bad tippers.)

I am glad to see they didn’t wrap up the fight today, as I thought they would. (I wonder if the Spirit isn’t hiding something in that splint…)

Yes, the Am doubles doesn’t make sense. Am says this guy has been in his employ for years- and Am hasn’t picked up on his waywardness? Pretty poor vetting.

I see another few weeks (or months) ahead before curtain time. I guess it is too PC for Tracy to waste a baddie. I’m still hoping to hear the crack of Doubleup’s whip.

Why does this remind me of all the smack talk we see on WWF?

Action indoors and outdoors. The storm won’t pass until Perenelle gets justice or Spirit leaves town, whichever comes first. It seems a lengthy life was snuffed out. I like the way the Siam has served as setting for most of this tale. The dinner at Tracy’s home was a good interlude, and not just because Mysta was there. We got Spirit’s moon memory, revealed in a stellar panel. Ramon is in a pickle, no doubt. Aiming his gun at Tracy? He might just as well use it on himself.

Thanks to Gweedo, Neil Wick, Blunebottle, Nun’ya Bidness, Ken in Ohio, Chris Sherlock, JPuzzleWhiz, Ray Toler and Vista Bill for the kind words. Very much appreciated!

Today’s Annie strip has a character in the first panel that (except for the nose) looks amazingly like Dick Locher’s Tracy in the last years – rather wooden, no hat, black suit and striped tie, wavy hair, thin mouth lines. Not wanting to start any anti- Locher rants here, it just reminded me of his take on Tracy near the end. In fact, it startled me when i first clicked on the Annie strip a few minutes ago.

Haven’t been keeping up with the comments, but anyone speculating a Doubleup intervention? He has plenty of motives (& can now justify).

Great artwork today, but this sequence seems awfully repetitive, almost a replay of the shoot-out with Brush & his accomplice a few weeks ago. Hopefully Joe & Mike will move on from this storyline pretty soon.

The Spirit is in the Clutch of Doom, yet remains as feisty as ever. Can he pull off the upset and pin the larger man? (Yeah, WWE metaphors tend to creep in on dainty cat’s paws during these dark and stormy nights.) My money’s on the Spirit, trick up his splint or not.

Meanwhile, as Ramon wilts in the downpour, Tracy keeps his powder dry just inside the balcony-door. He may be forced to shoot with his off-hand (Tracy is right-handed, but the shot from his position is more easily taken with his left hand); is he just as deadly that way? I postulate that like any good LEO his time on the shooting range includes practicing off-hand gunnery. Ramon is going to lose, one way or another, and he knows it (at least sub-consciously).

Withal, I am, as others, a bit surprised that we did not see more advancing of the plot today. Looks like some busy weekday strips ahead….

    Lightning shoots across the stage

The actors all take their place

The band’s in tune and everone’s ready to play

The audience waits with beating heart

    Anticipating quite a lot

But hoping both villains eventually are made to pay

No one knows what tomorrow might bring

A flip, a slip or a bell that goes ding

Oh well I guess we’ll have to wait another day

NightGaunt49: I know we disagree that this current story is too much like 1960s Batman. I’ll agree that in DT people do end up dead and in Batman, no one was armed. But seeing today’s strip, I’d say that’s where the dissimilarities end. I’m just waiting for someone to say, “Tune in tomorrow, same BAT time, same BAT channel!”
