What a missed opportunity to really create drama and tension.
Here’s my version;
1. BM appears to take a step towards Sam. Is she dropping the rod or aiming it towards him?
2. Close-up of Sam’s trigger finger which twitches, firing off a round that instantly kills BM.
3. MM’s lawyer accuses Sam of a hate killing, claiming Sam’s belief that the Margie’s were behind the cemetery vandalism led him to kill BM.
4. Tracy tells Sam he’s believes in him, Sam admits he’s not sure why he shot.
5. After an investigation Sam’s cleared of any wrongdoing, a verdict that sets MM over the edge, vowing revenge.
6. Sam, in an effort to ease his guilty conscious takes LM, who was never charged with any crime under his wings, getting her a job, education and keeping tabs on her.
7. MM, who is able to escape from jail corners Sam after getting LM with the intent to kill him.
8. LM, who’s life has drastically improved due to Sam and Tracy’s help is forced choose between love for her Cousin and her love and respect for Sam.
9. She chooses Sam, stopping MM from shooting Sam.
So, even at this point, Big Margie is shouting hateful things about the Jews infiltrating the police. She’s deliberately provoking Sam as he arrests her. She’s rather psychotic, in my unprofessional opinion.
This is an ending worthy of a pelting with rubber chickens (as I suggested a while back)! Seriously, we went from the Three Margies being a kind of Three Stooges, to ne’er-do-wells who couldn’t pay the rent, to clutzy criminals robbing an equally clutzy costume convention – to now, hardened criminals and Jew haters! Get your rubber chickens ready!
Boy, this got ugly pretty fast! I’m referring to Big Margie’s facial expression. Now all Sam and Dick has to do after dropping these two “ladies” in the hoosegow is to interview little Margie and being the most childlike of the trio, she’ll fold like an accordion and we can go on to the next comic book adventure for this eternal detective.
Isn’t that just any despised minority’s dilemma? Nothing will be good enough for those who hate you. Sam Catchem wanted so badly to be accepted as an ordinary Neo-Chicago police officer that he dresses like a dang leprechaun, for G*d’s sake, and still he catches this kind of abuse from the Margies of the world.
There may be an anti-Jewish website that has a list of policemen known or suspected to be Jewish. Sam is openly Jewish; his faith being shown (to us) through the prayers he said with his rabbi when Sam’s wife was undergoing chemotherapy.
[sighs] People’s self-image is so fragile they must hate /someone/. It’s one thing to hate someone who actually harmed you, but to hate someone just because of what they are, and they did nothing wrong, and maybe even done quite a bit of good?
It’s times like this I want to go home to Appalachia, in a tiny cabin with my animal companions and leave humanity behind. At least animals don’t hate.
Sam practices his faith and takes it seriously, unlike many “cultural Jews,” who do not (as an aside, the father of one of my best friends in college was a New York atheist Jew, married to a Catholic, which is what my friend was). But he is also a good, professional detective. So, if vile Big Margie is trying to bait him into some intemperate action that may void her arrest, she will fail.

We still have to see what happens with Little Margie.

Why would she know Sam was Jewish?

Are we going to find out the source of Big Margie’s anti-Semitism, or did that happen already and I missed it?

From today’s Comics Curmudgeon:

A minor coloring mistake on the last panel: that is presumably Sam – who has a green jacket – putting Big Margie into the car.

An ugly ending to a totally off-kilter story. The Margies & everything about the story can’t be put in Tracy’s rearview mirror fast enough.

Well, Big Margie just got a lot less hot. At least Middle and Little Margie haven’t done anything particularly evil yet.
