Iām really happy to see Mel in the strip again. I hope weāll see a bit of her campaign (although that might be difficult with a Sundays only strip).
Melissa is one of many who are emerging to stand up to Captain Courageous Bonespurs. He got the courageous part after declaring he would have rushed into the building without a weapon during the Parkland shooting.
It seems Cadet Bonespurs is now driving us off a cliff and 30% of the passengers are happy that the rest of us are terrified. Time for action! We are seeing this more and more. The issue of military rape is obviously troubling and difficult to fix. Our high school students have multiple actions planned in response to recent shootings, a mass rally on March 24, a walkout on April 20 at 10 am, numerous elections to stand behind gun control advocates. And right after trumpās election, who could forget the Womenās March? On and on it goes. I left out several other issues, there are so many. Meanwhile, Mr. Mueller is hard at work getting to the bottom of the Russia mess. Something must be getting close, Putin said this week we have Russian missiles aimed straight at us.
The fact that Mel is running for office makes me very happy. I know weāre not going to get a real story out of this on Sundays only, but Iām going to imagine one.
I hope Trudeau runs with this arc. Melissa and Joan are the perfect characters to address some of the important Veteranās issues that Wash. is sweeping under the carpet.
I read my paper every morning, couldnāt imagine doing without it (even though the quality of it is much lower than it used to be!) Of course, I also read a lot of cartoons and columns online. I canāt remember, did Jeff ever meet Melissa? (He probably hit on her!)
In regard to Cadet Bonespurs, I highly recommend everyone in Doonesburyland googling Randy Rainbow singing Stand By Your Man, trump. Just do it. RR is brilliant and hilarious.
Joanie show up first just after the ā72 Republican convention (see āCall Me When You Find Americaā) of indeterminate age but having had a child. Sheās supposed to be āolderā (see B.D.ās "Little of the olā Mrs. Robinson, eh, Mikey" comment) but to men in their early 20ās this could be anything over 25. She might be feeling ātoo oldā but sheās still sharper than the dotard in chief. Hope she sees her way to helping Melissa.
BTW, she and Rick got together during the Carter/Ford election or about 42 years ago. You donāt go that long without figuring out how to not have the significant other sleep on the couch.
I notice that Trudeau made it all the way thru this strip without mentioning you-know-who (blessed relief, that!), but the commenters havenāt been able to help themselves.
Hey, Mr Trudeau, how about making the contemporary plot twice a week now! I want to see this plot move forward with some momentum! (As delicious as the oldies are!)

Oh, Joanie, I thought you were too smart for reverse psychology.

Joanieās going to help, Rickās going through the window.

When did Rick become so judgmental (ācampus snowflakeā)?
Mr. Blawt about 7 years ago
Rick should have had his devil horns on ā the way he is advocating today.

Good to see sheās doing better than ever, sheās one bad-a$$ chick.

Rick is one of the few people who wears a necktie to sit at the kitchen table at home.

She may be a bit old, but I cannot imagine Joanie not helping out with this.

What a quaint anachronism, Rick reading a newspaper.
