Teenagers have been talking like that at least since I was a teenager. But I see people my age making fun of it, when they â or at least their peers â used to do the same thing.
Unfortunately, MY memory is much too acute to join in the chorus of the tune of the âMusic Manâ that goes âŠâwhy canât they be like we were, perfect in every way?â (though I do privately admit that it IS a âcatchyâ thought as well as tune!)
Using the present tense in reference to past events isnât something you can blame on any generation alive today. Itâs called the âhistorical present,â a term thatâs been around since the mid-19th century (and people were doing it long before anyone thought up a name for it).

You know what? EVERY day ought to be present-tense day. Carpe diem. Live for the moment. Be here now. Be present.
Thatâs what Iâve always thought.
Oops. I screwed it up.

Actually, Frazz, itâs Washingtonâs Birthday, not Presidents Day.
