I used to get these personal letters from Reader’s Digest, with special offers especially for me. They always stressed how important I was to them, and addressed me by my name. Which was typed on a dotted line, never quite matching the otherwise printed text.
Poor old Snoopy – my guess is Helen Sweetstory, she of the Bunny Wunnies, probably never even saw his letter… you would think she would have wanted to read a letter if she knew a DOG typed it out from on top of his doghouse after READING her book! Maybe..
When my son was in Junior High, he was a big Michael Crichton fan. He wrote him a letter and Crichton (apparently) sent him an autographed photo and a personal letter. He still talks about it sometime.
The “sugar cookie” is the basic recipe for many homemade cookies; just add a cup of whatever you’ve got to make chocolate chip, peanut butter, walnut, etc. cookies. Or if you have a bunch of options and can’t make up your mind, throw it all in there and call em Cowboy Cookies!
Sadly, Miss Sweetstory is probably some guy named Fred or Irv or something, who really aspires to write the Great American Novel, but does this to pay the bills…..
Poor Snoopy. He didn’t know that was a form letter. Lucy was an unpleasant dash of reality for him. He could have floated on that bubble for a while longer imagining that Sweetstory wrote to him and liked his letter.

Yeah. My birth certificate has Mayor LaGuardia’s signature on it. Wonder how many others have the same.

When I was a boy reading this particular strip, it may have been the first time I had heard about the idea of a form letter.
