We used to have a Scottish Terrier that insisted on making the rounds of the backyard every night about 1 or 2 AM. Wasn’t bad in the summer time, we just left the back door open for her. But she also insisted on going out in the winter, and when it was raining.
Not having a dog, or one who would sleep with me I have no idea how to figure this one out, but at least Puddles protects Luann. I say that because he is drawn so determined looking in panels 3 & 4, and seriously satisfied, as if he scared off whatever in panel 5, and back to sleep in Panel 6, but now, of course, Luann is awake, or groggily awake. Kind of cute, but kind of scary to, to me anyway.
My parents used to own three roosters who thought it would be fun to have crowing competitions at 3 in the morning every night, and my window was right above their coop. They thought it was funny whenever I’d come downstairs every morning, grumpy and with bags under my eyes. I was serious, though, when I threatened to make the roosters disappear if my parents did not get rid of them.
Re Luann’s facial expression in the last frame: When Luann turns 21, she may look like that sometimes at 8:00 A.M. Also – her sleeping posture is interesting.
My St. Bernard, Neil, was very sensitive. If she heard unfamiliar footsteps on the sidewalk, she would alert by the front door with a low growl, and track the sound until it passed our yard. One night she alerted, and then started following “something” around the inside of the outer walls. I got my shotgun out of the basement, and when she came to the patio door, I made a loud production of chambering a round. Neil cocked her ears, gave a disgusted “rooph” and went back to bed. She got an extra serving of doggie treats that evening.

He’s going to the garage for the rest of the night. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

Actually, this is reminiscent of the old Luann strip.

How many barks does it take to wake up a sleeping Luann? Let’s see. I count 13 barks.

That’s when you nudge him off the bed mid-bark.

HEY!
Maybe Puddles is Barking because there’s a mouse under your bed, Luann!
Either that, or that creepy little Elwood Druit has returned to ask you marry him again, and is hiding in your closet……

Ah, doggie dreams.
My mother’s poodle used to sleep with me and do that at times. It was easier getting back to sleep after that than when he’d have gas attacks, though.

Puddles is barking because Brad, Toni, Shannon, and TJ were sneaking in in the middle of the night. Seems their house is flooded.

In Jumpstart, the family thinks the dog is barking at imaginary intruders. We are shown they are real and scared off.

Happy almost 4th! Dogs barking in the night, huddling under beds, running in terror on walks.

Sweetheart has done this to me a couple of times.
The first time was when i had a bear go through my property.
Sweetheart barking and growling at the bedroom window is a good reason to not go outside to see what the fuss is all about.

The perversity of pets is well-known. I keep none, ostensibly because they are forbidden in my condo building….
