My husband is of the opinion that if it bothers me, I should clean it up. It bothers me, so I clean it up. (It’s almost like an itch till it’s clean… I know I have a problem.)
A teaching moment can be presented without a “heavy hand.” Simply giving Nelson paper towels and telling him to clean/wipe/mop up the mess he made is a first step in his understanding the meaning of taking responsibility for his actions. We learn by example and if Opal cleans it up, Nelson learns to expect that and becomes another victim of “entitlement”.

Opal, if you want a job done right you have to do it yourself.

Blame it on a cow, that’s where the milk came from. Then we can put it on social media and sue the farmers.

Poor baby. It was an accident. He should participate in cleaning, though.

Make the kid clean up the mess, using a carpet cleaner and wet vacuum, and supervise to make sure he does it right.
