Being on the West Coast where we don’t have lightning bugs, do they really make enough light to read by? I’d would think with that much light they would shine out like a target sign to every predator, here I am….eat me.
a single firefly produces a light about as bright as a typical candle, but only for about a second or so, and it only carries for a few inches, for you to get enough light to read by they’d have to be so close and there would have to be so many of them that the bugs would get in your way.
If you want to amaze your friends by drinking a Glow in the Dark drink, try Tonic Water.
The Quinine in “Tonic” glows bright blue when you shine a “Black Light” UV light source on it.
If the flavor is too bitter for you at first, maybe try adding a little extra Gin. It worked for the British Army which is the Origin of the “Gin & Tonic”. It was the only way the doctors could get the British soldiers to take their Quinine when they were fighting Malaria in the tropics. Someone observed: “They’ll drink anything if you put a little bit of Gin in it.”

You would not believe your eyes,
If ten million fireflies,
Lit up the Readers’ nighttime sky!
We’d love to stay here all night,
And read by the firefly’s light,
It may be hard but we will try!
We’d like to make ourselves believe,
The nighttime passes slowly,
It’s hard to stay up all night, but we will give it a try,
And read by the firefly beams!

As with yesterday’s butterflies: more fireflies there than seen here on any three nights combined. Love ’em and miss ’em

Years ago, when I was young, on a Summer night we had a front yard full of them every night. Now, I see one about once every three nights.

One of the things I miss about when I lived in Virginia. Fireflies are enchanting.
