Every toxin on Earth eventually finds its way to the oceans, always has.

Why do you think our ancestors wanted to get out of the water?

While this strip shows modern pollution makers. The medieval industries were even worse polluters. There were no controls and all waste went back into the environment. They seemed to have no conception of the poisons and toxins they were putting into the soil and their waters. Also they were much more inefficient back then too. The big, big difference with today’s pollution is that is more concentrated an refined. Also the sheer amount of pollution would boggle the Medieval mind. But many modern industries are doing better, realizing that people have to live here too. And are cleaning up their “act”.

Let’s all remember that in this cartoon universe, anything and everything is possible. Are Parker and Hart trying to make some sort of social commentary in the second panel? You’ll have to ask them. As far as I’m concerned, the second panel makes no sense whatever.

Littlejohn: Medieval industries were not creating brand new poisons and blanketing the Earth with them, nor had they obliterated enormous forests, nor loaded up the atmosphere – and oceans – with CO2, nor had they created the Sixth Great Extinction. Etc.
