I like Jack. He doesn’t appear to be as self-centered as Quill. Luann has found someone who is kind and appreciative. I’m hoping their friendship blossoms and grows ever stronger.
It would be interesting to see what advice or leads Tiffany could have given Jack. After all, it seems that she and her family are well connected not just here, but globally. Tiffany knew Simone that owned the lingerie company in Paris, and I bet she knows a lot of people who could set Jack up with a well paying job to help him put himself through college, instead of walking dogs or something like that.
We know that will never happen because Greg will not let Tiffany do anything good in this strip. There are times when I think Greg created Tiffany to represent someone who spurned his advances in his earlier life, and Tiffany is carrying the cross for that individual.
The Luann/Jack relationship seems to be growing on a strong foundation of respect, appreciation, affection. Can you imagine Jack having similar conversations with Tiffany? I think we are about to see some serious personal growth for Luann. I am looking forward to the next few weeks. I see study dates, fun stuff in chemistry lab, then celebrating over pizza and then movie or dinner dates.
Wow, after a two minute talk, Jock has direction in his life. Perhaps in Chem class he will discover fire (Fire… …Good…!), and in Physics, he will discover properties of the wheel. He certainly did not know much about changing one when the tire went flat and Luann had to change it for him. Gunther is looking better all the time. At least he does not have a roving eye… LOL
I’ve noticed that Luann has filled out. She’s not plus-sized like Tiffany, but she definitely has a regular-woman figure now. Which could fit better the role of a school counselor, couldn’t it?
B I N G O ! I’ve always said how funny it is that you can help everyone else and you don’t listen to yourself! He seems to have matured. He’s also a great match for Tara, I think. That may even be next.
What is being set-up here, Luann’s ability to do good things in another person’s life, with unintended consequences? Or that Luann may have feelings she is not allowing herself to understand? Or just that being friendly and helpful can really make a difference in another student, one who, in spite of his sunny disposition, was depressed? Depression is a major issue in college students, and often the depression that a person might have is masked by a “happy” exterior. There are so many ways this can go, I hesitate to predict, but it is a very interesting path for Luann, the protagonist who forever feels insecure about her real self, and how that self projects to others, particularly young men.
Luann told him he was good with animals, and he should become a vet, so he got a job as a fitness instructor. Did he really need Luann’s advice about his possible future career to get a job that is completely unrelated to it?
There appears to be a major change in the future for the Jack character. He’s now a fitness trainer not a football player. His physical appearance is changing, his college courses have moved away from grade point fluffers, and his career goals have coalesced. Apparently Greg was telegraphing this move with the dog park episode. At that time, most (myself included) were speculating a ground shift in their relationship. Jack keeps showing up, folks; in person or in girl talk. Stay tuned!
Now that we know Greg telegraphs!
Previously there were major shifts in Tiffany (retro), and in the Gunter and Leslie milieu. Some (myself included) speculated a Gunther/Leslie tussle over Tiffany. Now it looks like maybe a Luann/Tiffany tussle revolving around Jack. Where does that leave Gunther, Les, Al and Irma in this pantheon of arcs? Stay tuned some more! Same Gnk time. Same GnK channel! :o)
Regarding Jack becoming a vet. As I recall there were two episodes with a veterinarian. One was when they found a lump in Puddles. Both times the vet looks like he was drawn from life and was very good looking. The drawings were much less cartoony than Greg treats himself and his family and friends. In the second appearance he had aged quite a bit. Apparently Greg has a high opinion of vets, at least that one, and the episode may have reflected a real incident.
This could portent a long future for Jack in the strip. Maybe instead of the blazing hot relationship Luann had with Quill, we’ll see a steadier relationship built. (Maybe like Nancy and Frank????)
I don’t understand. Is this strip’s point simply to further show Jack is an idiot, by making him casually state a non sequitur? He loves animals and has apparently been told by Luann to become a vet. So gets a new job at…a place whose name certainly sounds like a gym. O-kayyy.
Well, I guess it could be an animal gym, not that I’ve ever heard of such a place.
One of the things that shockingly gave me a lot of pleasure was Gunther and Tiffany a few years ago. Seemed like they were going to be a thing. I guess it satisfied me so much because that post-high school change that so many of us go thru where, when separated from your clique you learn so much about yourself and others. Seeing Luann and Jack together it feels like she hasn’t really done that yet. I’m hoping she has her own growth period and maybe Jack is the one to help it along. He’s a good dude it seems from what we have seen of him.
Here’s the thing. It IS possible for a man and a woman to be JUST FRIENDS. Why does everyone want to immediately make this a romantic thing? I’d like to see this arc continue with Luann and Jack simply remain friends.
Seriously, if these two do not end up together I am going to be seriously disappointed! It’s not about making everything romantic but about seeing a pair who compliment each other and that relationship blossom into something more than just friendship…remember Love Wins!

Simple drawings with real talent – the way Luann’s facial expressions fit the lines.

If this were 60 Years Ago, I’d say Luann would be great writing an advice column for the local newspaper, not unlike Ann Landers once did.
Funny thing about advice, Luann. Today, you get praise for good advice. Tomorrow, if your advice goes BADLY, then you’ll end up taking the BLAME.

Luann once said about Quill, “He wasn’t ready.” That was advice she probably didn’t really hear.
