The original Mickey Mouse Club had Anything Can Happen Day, but so did the most recent series. It’s kind of old, now, too, but I suppose maybe they still air reruns?
Based on the last panel of Sunday’s strip and my previous musings based on Neil’s “Peter and the Wolf” observation, I think Anything Can Happen Day in Tracyville might just happen to include a Crystal-napping. To mix and match my fables, she’s the Ugly Duckling who gets swallowed by the Wolf.
Crystal will get abducted by Mr freeze as leverage against Bribery to give over his control of the crime in Tracyville, Lafayette will “do the right daddy thing” and take a bullet for crystal sacrificing himself to save her
It is extremely rare for this strip to mention something from the real world by name. Gould almost always made up a parody name, such as (off the top of my head) " The Sammy Squirrel Club". He had “Glance” magazine (for Look), “Emptier Brush Co”. (for Fuller), etc. His newspapers were always generic – “The Daily Daily”, for example. (He did have Tracy travel to real places, such as Hawaii, and he mentioned real cities sometimes)
I never noticed this before, but look at the teeth of both Crystal and Honeymoon in the last panel. Joe gave Crystal lines to indicate the individual teeth, but not Honeymoon. I went back to check every appearance of Honeymoon since the schoolyard drug pusher incident. He seems to always draw Honeymoon’s teeth without the lines. Probably doesn’t mean anything.
Feels like years since I last commented on Dick Tracy. Even though I’ve been flying under the radar, I’m still reading and enjoying the strip, especially Joe’s great art. Mostly I just wanted to say hey! Now that I’ve broken radio silence, I will also say that I still think Honeymoon and Mysta are the emotional center of the new Tracy universe. Meaning that of the ongoing cast, those two stir up more excitement, imagination, intrigue and strong emotions (mostly positive and some negative) than any other characters, by far. At least that is my observation and experience. So very happy whenever I see Honeymoon, as today with her new friend Crystal, whom I also like. I just wish we could see more of Mysta. Ms. Chimera lights up this page, stirs up interest in what is happening, and best of all gets us wondering what COULD happen, like no one else. So many mysteries left to explore with her, and I enjoy rooting her on. Hope she is in the spotlight in coming stories, because eliciting strong emotions in the fanbase is the best way to increase popularity and excitement about the strip. All right, that’s enough for now, and I’m out! Great day to all!
….getting way ahead of this, I know….but with him being a police informant, lot of turns this could take, both high ones, and/or dark ones, for Crystal……Mike has set himself up nicely with story options here……
Maybe Crystal and Honeymoon (“Moon Chick”: I kinda like that nickname for her) are nostalgia fans. Otherwise, there is no way they’d know at their ages (just entering their ‘teens) about the Mickey Mouse Club, unless strip time is either set at least a generation ago (not likely) or is highly compressed or conflated (more likely). Anyway, however it comes about, the girls are knowledgeable about such things if not so much about DNA testing technique (I’m surprised scientifically-minded Honeymoon seems just as unaware of this as Crystal, who has seemingly had a more “traditional” European finishing school education). Their very happy moods will probably be interrupted all too soon by some Nefarious Plot….

There is so many ways to access the past. Yet people continue to forget it.

11:25 am EDT – Tracy is almost the only comic on GC that has updated. Nearly all the other strips I look at are still showing yesterday’s strip.

Tune in tomorrow, Dicko and Friends meet Little Einsteins. Anyone remember when this was a detective strip?

Crystal is very excited about it, but calm and matter-of-fact at the same time. I really like her as a character.
