That must have been on there for a long, long time to be metal fasteners – someone noted that they are mostly plastic these days… they have been for more than a decade or more.
Just go buy a “Toilet in a Box” kit at the big box home center if you know how to put them in, otherwise, fork out the $500 for a plumber to put the same quality fixture in for you…
In loo of a better situation he still did a crappy job. The commode-ity market took a plunge. He should know at his age how to go nuts without cracking up. Get a grip on the situation Earl or you’ll end up holdin’ yer own. At least it didn’t all go down the tubes so what could be the problem, right? If he was a professional plumber Earl would clean up.
Gotta love the anti-gravity properties in comics-land. That toilet tank is suspended in mid-air held on one end by just a tiny supply tube. (Even more amazing is if that supply tube is the newer flexible type)
Wasn’t the last steel bolt on a toilet seat used about 50 years ago? Brass bolts came next, and nowadays you can’t buy a seat that doesn’t use nylon/plastic fasteners.

Or you could just wait for the bolts to rust though.

That will not make a planter.
Louie99theKing about 6 years ago
You needed a new toilet anyway.

Now the plumber will charge twice as much for re-doing the job.

I would hazard a guess that Earl has never heard of WD-40! Myself I use a Dremel tool and cut off the bolt head.

Well Nelson now you know how not to do this job !

Many problems can be solved—-by creating a worse problem!

That is a common Tim Taylor move.

It’s rather amazing how brittle a toilet is.

Earl: A good example of being a bad example…

Note to self: don’t chisel on a toilet, lol!
arianseren about 6 years ago
Not the older seats – we had to change on at our mom’s house – ended up sawing it off – based on Earl’s outcome – I’m glad we did
jimmeh about 6 years ago
Now he can show Nelson how to get the nuts off of the rusty bolts on the base.

On how I hate plumbing. Things never go smoothly. I would gladly reroof a friend’s house before fixing a “simple” plumbing problem.

Years of… missing.. have corroded those brass bolts.. serves Earl right for his lack of precision while.. going

No panic yet, but better get mopping up the water Earl
Linguist about 6 years ago
This happened to me ! Exactly like Earl.
The only difference was that I was changing the seat for my ex-wife at my ex-house !

Toilet seat bolts are made of plastic. They don’t rust.

Been there, done that. Trying to remove the tank from the bowel
jslabotnik about 6 years ago
A bonus- Opal cannot complain he left the toilet seat up.

It’s that kind of thought that keeps me from fixing most of my plumbing problems.
rwstyles1234 about 6 years ago
That’s why those things are plastic or brass.

If you cut off the bolt head how do you get the rest of it out so you can use the new parts?

Funny how comic strip toilets have four bolts holding them down!
