Thankfully, I have teenage daughters. If I don’t feel like cooking, one of them will. I particularly love when my 13-year-old makes her wonderful scrambled eggs.
Normally a comic strip like this would be an exercise for Lynn Johnston to come up with all sorts of weird names for products. We have Salt ‘n’ Vinegar chips, Fruit Drink, Raspberry Punch, Pudding Cup, Honey, Peanut Butter, Assorted Cookies, Taco Chips, Jam, Onion Dip. The only fun names are Sugar Zaps, Choko Puffs Cereal, and Yu… Oaties. We also see a bowl of chips, a bowl of cookies, and a loaf of bread. Is the joke supposed to be that we consider a peanut butter and jam sandwich, chips, cookies, and fruit punch to be a bad meal? In my house, we have been known to have sandwiches, chips and cookies.
Since yesterday’s strip was about Elly’s mother, I am somewhat surprised this one did not turn into Elly guilt-tripping herself that she is not the kind of mother she figured her mother to be. An example was one strip where she was cleaning out the refrigerator.
Elly: This fruit is rotten…
Elly opens up a Tupperware container
Elly: PU! This smells like Michael’s room!
Elly puts everything in a trash bag
Elly: Even though this food is old and moldy, I still feel bad about throwing it out…
Elly:{thinking to herself}: …my mother would have made it into a casserole.

that’s “smörgåsbord”, Elizabeth (I even wonder if John is of Scandinavian ancestry)

In my house it’s known as a GYO. Get Your Own.

Never happened at my house. If my mom didn’t want to cook, then she’d toss TV dinners in the oven for us, or make a Mickey-Ds or KFC run.

You may not have to cook Elly but they’re going to leave you a gargantuan mess to clean up.

“Looks like an Arby’s night” – Puddy to Elaine. (We’ve taken up that joke for real here in our house).

Well Ellie, we just don’t want to hear you complain about how the children don’t “eat well”.

I do that about once or twice a week in my house. We call it, “Fend for yourself night”. Got that term from my mom.

Not a bad idea, Elly…my Mom never did it, and we usually just do carry out if we don’t feel like cooking.
