I know it might be a joke, about not knowing who Mr. Potter is….
but just in case anyone hasn’t seen or doesn’t remember “It’s a Wonderful Life”….
Mr. Potter is (to most people, anyway) the villain of the piece…
an unscrupulous, greedy man who owns the only bank and a lot of the other businesses in town.
He’s the nemesis of the hero, George Bailey, the reluctant heir to his father’s beloved Building and Loan company, which makes mortgages for a lot of working people in town that the bank would reject.
Mr. Potter has various nefarious schemes for taking over George’s business, and shutting it down…. boo…. hiss…
At a turning point in the plot, he’s handed what could be (no spoilers) a real chance to help the Building and Loan, with a kind gesture, but instead, he tries to ruin them.
(To find out what happens, watch the movie!)
Played by the inimitable Lionel Barrymore in his real-life wheelchair….
He’s a hero to Sedgewick, I guess, because of his unbridled capitalism, with no sissy weak spots like altruism or pity.
