For the first time, we went to a tree farm to cut a fresh tree. When we got it set up at home, the room stunk of smoke. The farmer had a large fire burning near his trees. Its been a week now, and the smoke smell has faded; but there’s not a hint of pine. But Merry Christmas to one & all!
Traditions build themselves but we only see them when we take time to look back at the passing years.
We once lived on some acreage where we used to find some kind of tree each year. Didn’t matter what kind so long as we liked it. One year we chose a pretty fir, set it up and decorated it. Next morning we came in to find thousands of tiny bugs that had hatched in the warm den. Lots of fun trying to herd them into a vacuum. That adventure is one that we treasure as one of our most unusual Christmases. Later we temporarily moved into square feet with 3 rooms and had to go artificial. It worked but it wasn’t anywhere near as much fun. On the other hand, that tree has been with us for over 20 years and is still a pleasure to decorate. It’s family.
I got a gift from my wife that I never dreamed I would get, something I’ve wanted very much. It pales in comparison with the time spent with my family and my boys’ reactions to their gifts, especially sharing the edibles and their new toys. I asked my six year old two days ago what the meaning of Christmas is and he simply said, “Giving.” . Christmas means love and I love my family!

I love the fresh cut trees. When I would buy them I liked to get them from the local volunteer fire departments.

Ah yes! The joy and contentment of the wafting delight of plastic and electricity in a controlled environment!
