Those who mock vegetarians and vegans should read up on factory farms. Reading just a couple such books (Omnivore’s Dilemma and Animal Factory; Eating Animals, which I’m reading now, blows both of those away) quickly turned me from a meat-loving omnivore to someone who is primarily vegan. Factory farms, which produce almost all of the meat that you’ll find in stores and restaurants, are environmental disasters, destroy family farms, devastate surrounding property values, create health risks for those who eat the meat, spread and significantly intensify disease, and subject animals to torturous conditions. Being able to buy chicken for 99 cents a pound comes at an incredible cost. If you must eat meat (and virtually no human MUST eat meat - it’s a choice), choose only meat that is raised by humane, sustainable, traditional means. If you don’t know where your meat came from, don’t eat it.
Oh, yeah, and taste tests have consistenly shown that humanely-raised meat actually tastes better (the animals are healthier and happier, which makes them tastier), and healthy animals which are fed only what they would eat naturally are also much more nutritious (a hormone-free, grass-fed cow yields meat that is comparable in omega-3 and -6 fatty acids to farm-raised salmon).
Eldo, I made 53 this past December and I used to read Pogo in the papers. Of course I learned to read at age 3. Got my smarts from my mom who was valedictorian of her high school class, got my common sense from mom and dad, and technical abilities from my dad. Best of both worlds.

I was always better at geography than ethics.
Actually, if it wasn’t for ‘Star Trek’, I wouldn’t know anything about Vegans.
