When I was a kid, I found the contrast between Calvin’s reaction and his parents to be hilarious. Now that I’m older, I can understand the commentary Bill made here.
As long as something special like Hobbes hasn’t been taken, Calvin doesn’t understand the horror of a break-in. He just thinks it’s something cool to brag about. It’s not until you’re an adult that you really understand how scary such a thing is.
Some stuff was pilfered from an apartment of mine years ago. I suspected another tenant, but could never prove anything. Got the landlady to put a deadbolt lock on the door.
None of it was very valuable, but there was one engraved watch that was a memento of a particular event. I could have bought an equally good watch, maybe the same model, but it wouldn’t have been the same. Some of the jewelry that these burglars got could be like that. Apart from the insecure feeling that comes from not being able to keep intruders out, it’s the loss of things with personal associations that hurts.
Our locked tool shed was broken into and a lawnmower stolen. Several weeks later they tried again, but I had reinforced the bracings and put a bigger lock on it, so they didn’t get in, but did cause a lot of damage to the shed itself. So, after fixing up the damaged wood, I bought a special “alarm” lock, that emits a very loud wail if it is moved too much. Shed was never disturbed again…
My uncle had his home ransacked, when he wasn’t home. Nothing was taken. He had nothing of value, he isn’t poor but he lives very frugally, no TVs, just books and a cheap radio.I doubt the crooks will be back.

What kind of burglars would return to the house they’d robbed the night before?

Let’s be honest.
Literally NO ONE at school is going to believe Calvin’s house was broken into.

Gotta love that contrast with the third and fourth panels! Of course Calvin would think burglars breaking into and robbing his house is cool!
