You almost have to feel sorry for Calvin. His expression in the last panel says that he knows he screwed up big time and that he’s in MAJOR trouble because of it!
I strikes me that someone must have neglected to either put the car in “Park” or to set the parking brake and the car rolled away on its own. Calvin (and Hobbes) had nothing whatever to do with it, right Calvin?
He’s not even 8 yet and he totaled his first car! I seem to recall that there was a strip where his dad remarked that someday Calvin will wreck the car.
Calvin’s parents seem to go for basic transportation. He’s still on the hook for a lot more money than he has. It might be time to sell Hobbes to the circus.
My little brother, then about 4 or 5 years old, once climbed into the jeep we’d used to get way out in the country for a picnic; to play at driving it while it was parked on a slight slope that led to a much steeper embankment with trees below that.
And took it out of gear.
Everybody else was 100 feet away awaiting a suitable cooking fire. I’ll never forget the look on the parental faces with the sound of the jeep hitting the trees. Heck I even worried (age 9 or 10)… and everybody was looking around to try to figure out who wasn’t standing there.
PS: He was fine, though scared, mostly about the possible punishment I think. The jeep sustained a broken windshield, but was otherwise fine (It was WW II vintage and built from serious sheet steel). My mom and sisters were all over him to make sure he was okay. My dad and the male sibs were all over the jeep. Amusing split of responsibilities in hindsight.
Re: the Nature of Reality. Note the car nearly vertical here. Also note, a strips later, that the car is towed out without any damage. BW sees no contradiction in that, any more than a stuffed toy that’s real. At this moment, Calvin’s world has ended.
Like Mark Twain said about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn: they were unable to wrap their heads around an amount of money greater than $5. Calvin apparently has similar limitations.

How much did a car usually cost back in 1989 (the date is between the last two panels)? I was four to five years old then.

There goes your allowance for the next 47 years, Calvin.

At this point, Calvin should have been “scared straight”. But then Watterson would have had to retire 5 years early.

Guaranteed, what ever it costs it is more than you have. That’s the way with accidents.

If you’re talking about the cost to get it fixed then add a zero to the end of that, Hobbes!

Now? Probably… maybe you could get $100… ;-)

Calvin might get wheel for $75. A well-used wheel.

In addition to damage to the car there’s the fee for the tow truck fee, insurance costs, Calvin’s funeral…. $75 may not quite cover it.

I don’t know how Watterson captures that feeling so simply.

Calvin is in deep do do and maybe mom ends up with a new car? Hope there’s good insurance.

Holy crap, it’s painful to read comments on how Calvin is in SO MUCH TROUBLE and that HE’S SO DEAD when you know what actually happens.

$75 is pretty close.

Don’t know about back then but nowadays it would cost more than that just to get the car towed out of the ditch!

Judging by the way the car is drawn in panels 2 and 3, the car is still moving. They may want to step back until it’s done thrashing.

My dad once told me any car that was driveable was worth $50 (this was in 1963), I’m not sure that applies to that car.

If you believe the internet, the average cost of a new car in 1989 was $12,000…

$75 may be less than what is required to retrieve the car from the ditch. C&H are in real trouble.
